I enjoyed this puzzle, and solved it pretty quickly - except for the embarrassing amount of time I spent trying to figure out why an iPad was wearing a dress.
I don’t have a specific comment, but I want to add my vote to the thumbs up column. I thought this puzzle was great fun.
Ah yes, the satisfaction of completing a puzzle when you start by not knowing a single answer. Excellent exercise for a Saturday morning.
Every time I think I might try my hand at crossword construction I get wowed by a brilliant offering like this, and I scurry back to reality.
@BigRob Yes, you are the only one.
I would’ve done better time-wise if I hadn’t misread etymologist as entomologist, causing me to create a logjam in the NW corner with the word “insects” instead of “origins”. But aside from that, fun puzzle!
Put me down as a fan. Solve time was 50% slower than my average, but I enjoyed the challenge and seeing something new. Hats off to the clever creators.
Saturday difficulty in Sunday form. Fun for a change, but let’s not make it a habit, ok?
Phew! Took double my average time. NW corner was a killer. Think I’ll take a nap,
Excellent puzzle, if a bit difficult for a Tuesday, and congrats on your acceptance after so many rejections! Your perseverance is admirable. Keep it up!
Based on time to complete, shoulda been a Tuesday. Fun though.
This was hard - until it wasn’t! My solve time ended up being 30% under my average. Fun puzzle.
A thing of beauty! Thanks for a very fun puzzle.
It’s fun to have something thrown out of left field every once in a while. C’mon everyone, it’s just a puzzle! It took me significantly longer to complete than average. Which is a good thing.
Nice job, young man! I have a feeling you’re going to go far in life.
Friday was double my average time. Today was less than half. A Saturday puzzle completed in 8 minutes?? Thanks for the break, I guess.
Wow, what a fantastic puzzle! I have not seen such amusing clues in a while. Great job!!
A masterpiece! Took me six minutes over my average time, but wow.
Ok, this one made me laugh out loud. Well done!
At a senior center? Ouch!
My exclamation on completing this puzzle…or what you wear when jumping out of an airplane?
Whew, tough one! But super satisfying when finally done, even if it was twice my average time.
Wow, talk about groaners! Fun puzzle, though.
Came here to comment on the Mini. Please stop calling “jumbo shrimp” an oxymoron. It’s not. Shrimp is the name of the animal, obviously, not a reference to size. Words can have two meanings.
Let me add to the chorus complaining that “hole” was not accepted.
Nice to know there was a good reason I couldn’t understand the theme - no underlining or parentheses on the app. Kind of surprised the Times couldn’t do better though.
@Tex I’m with you, Tex! Some of us like challenges. If others don’t, let them skip that day. Don’t deprive the rest of us an occasional twist now and then.
@Eddie I also used to skip MTW, but now I do them for time which increases my interest quite a bit. I try to get M in under five minutes, T under 7, and so forth. (Not able to today, it was a little tough for a T!)
@The X-Phile Well, how ‘bout this: the puzzle was not extremely hard for me, but it took a full two minutes longer than my average solving time for a Monday. So I would call it difficult for a Monday puzzle.
@SeaportOne Ok, how can I not? 22:17 (Maybe there should be a separate thread for braggers?)
@ad absurdum Except….you are wrong about that! The galaxy a long time ago is Star Wars. Star Trek is in the future.
@AmRad Emphasis on first syllable of refuse, as in trash.
@Caro I have to agree with you. The problem is, factoid in its intended meaning was a useful word. And now there’s nothing to take its place.
@miniMeissner Hey everyone, as a flute player, let me confirm they were referring to a part of a champagne flute not a part of the musical instrument.
@Darren From the play, Waiting for Godot
Because this is a nitpicky group, allow me to point out the correct use of the word “factoid” would be to indicate a statement which is fact-like (hence the suffix -oid, meaning “resembling”). An example might be, “it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert.” In other words, a statement that seems true but can’t be substantiated, I believe you were using factoid to mean “trivia” or small fact. Perhaps we should start using factlet for that?
