Ooof. All the hate. Personally I liked it. Thursdays always throw curve balls and this wasn’t really that hard. For me it was ARTOIS/BISHOP and the inability to make crosses work. That’s why I come to the puzzle - to figure it out. To think a bit differently and try something new… that’s the whole point! And I’m glad they’re all different - keeps it interesting.
Wired. Wired!!! I had to lookup the marble.
Wow. Some amazing clueing. 49A has to be in the running for clue by of the year.
Not fun at all. Clues are far too obscure - and I still don’t understand some of them. South East was the only quadrant I could do without help from the column
Today I’m reading comments about how programmers don’t deserve their pay because of how the new app looks. Are the moderators asleep? As for the puzzle… spent way too long trying to figure out what DOOR DIE meant.
Not my wavelength. So not so easy for me. But very satisfying. And some great clueing. Took me one cigar and two bourbons. So timing was perfect.
The puzzle was fine. Certainly not warranting all the negatives. Some natick… sure - but not that much. A couple of nice misdirects. I look forward to Thursday through Sunday and stretching my mind a little.
@C.A. In sport a team can advance to the next round without a match - known as a BYE
Enjoyed this one lots. Smelled a rat right off with Ver..y - hmm. No if. Then the phrase popped right in my head. Only had trouble with sifting and butcher.
I had scuba tanks and the rest of the puzzle done but for two downs and an across based on the t and n of tanks. I thought I was going mad - was I really going to stumble on a Monday? Thanks to that - way over my average and this puzzle delivered me a THWACK
Did it. But the theme remains a mystery. Guesses and crosses got me there in the end.
I enjoyed solving this. Nice work out. What a feat of construction! Congrats constructor - nice one.
I had tink before ting. When I make a toast my glass is full and goes tink. When it’s empty and I want a refill it goes ting!
@Michael N. Funny how the mods delete all kinds of posts and then let Sam’s through.
I love tricky Thursdays and the more they hurt my brain the better. This was one of the better.
Haven’t had to work so hard in some time. Felt like 2016 and earlier in the archives. Well done constructor.
I always play on my phone. always. My streak is 15 hundred and something. But today I was at my computer and I used the browser. And the revealer was blindingly obvious because of how its laid out. Once I had ALL FOR ONE - the clue "shall" was highlighted - and there it was - broad as daylight. I might use the browser more often now.
@Francis Welcome to a Weintraub puzzle.
Oh man… loved this one. Great clues and fun entries. Well done and thank you.
Yeah. Wrong time to run this puzzle
The twist was neat. Cluing was a little easy though
@jeb yep. Exactly what had me going over and over trying to figure where I went wrong. I’m not even sure why wrist is the correct answer.
Wowzers. My brain hurts. That was genius level. Well done!
Fast solve. No idea what the theme was.
Turns out you really didn’t need the underlines to finish the puzzle. It was pretty easy without. I enjoy a Thursday so I guess I was a little disappointed there was no ah-ha. Reading the column, I’m not sure the ah-ha would have been that interesting anyway. Also - yeah, sometimes the app doesn’t do something the way it was intended- but really - the level of upset…. If you really missed that Thursday feeling- click on archive and choose from almost 1,500 other Thursdays.
@Adrian UK ex-pat here. In the US a biscuit is a different thing altogether that you have with a meal and is covered in gravy (I think of it loosely as a cousin of a scone). Whereas everything you and I would call biscuits are called cookies here, including cookies - that we think of as the chocolate chip kind.
@Steven M. Some of us over 35 have kids…
Phew. Less worried about our National Debt now.
First time in a long while I’ve needed the column to get a handle somewhere.
Sometimes you come across a head scratcher that humbles you and reminds you that you’re not so clever after all. Not a streak breaker but definitely nudged my average in the wrong direction. Loved it.
I liked the puzzle, a little easy for a Thursday. Perhaps without the shaded squares it might have added a little more of a challenge.
Why SEND for Delight? Otherwise really nice puzzle - great clues. Going to dig up back to the future DVD
Oops. Never mind. Read the column. Makes a lot more sense now
@Eric Hougland go see the musical when it comes around. You’ll enjoy that too.
@Wendy it’s Thursday… keep going
Fun, decent theme. Not too hard. I don’t get 32D , Die spot.. PIP. Anyone help me out?
@Pho Liz bite my shiny metal 72A
I mean. I did it, and I know what spoonerisms, are but other than “felt fat”, I’m at a loss.
@Ken W. I’m guessing something dwelling unit. Alternative, adjunct, another, also…. Others?
