What a fun puzzle! I wish the top comments were more positive. We had LINE too, but then it became clear with the downs *and* the puzzle title (big clue!!) that we should try hyphens. TA-DA! Hang in there, you cross xword peeps - let that streak go, open your heart to possibilities, look at things anew, keep on trying. If it's not fun, skip current Thursdays and Sundays, and go to the archives!
So fun! I thought I recognized the Enterprise quickly, so crossed my fingers. And then saw the beams. So cool! The rest of the fill was hard while trying to figure out all the misdirects, but they started to fall into place after getting most of the Trek ones. Thank you and I love what you say about the show, it is often a source of optimism for me.
Enjoyed the puzzle! Mostly a quick fill. I understand those who don't like the extra challenge when it's a rebus puzzle, and maybe NYT could put an asterisk next to the date or something so rebus haters could skip it and do an archived one? But they're my favorite. We got the trick half way through after getting the revealer, and we know from past puzzles that when there's a difference between the down and across, the slash is added. Super fun. Thank you NYT for the entertainment.
Making decent time, put in the last letter... and no potty music! (RIP Andre Braugher) Spent 10 min checking... Caitlin, you're right, GAWk/GAWP stopped us from a gold star today. The cross didn't help. GAWP?! Oh well! Favorite ones: YEET, ISOLATEDSPRINKLES, MORINGFROST. Very fun theme!
@Grant AMANDA Gorman was the nation's first National Youth Poet Laureate and even performed at a Super Bowl. She's awesome - I suggest getting to know her work!
Numbers - great! Times in the Times - so fun! No issues there. However, too many names and found too much fill to be obscure with obscure crosses, so had to look up a few, which is unusual. A slog. But I'm happy to see so many here who loved it.

@joepb There have been multiple comments that the slash was not needed and different entries were acceptable for these rebus squares. If there were tech problems in different formats, I get some frustration. Past puzzles have required a slash when the rebus is different for across/down

@SP I too love rebus puzzles and did enjoy this one. If people just didn't like it, okay. But why are people thinking "Swing States" needs to be political? It doesn't need to mean purple states. Other ways to swing? Maybe swing because they aren't in a UNION with their usual neighbor? Or other swings? And I believe in an across/down situation, the two aren't necessarily related or need to make a new word. I'm voting for an asterisk by the date so haters can skip the puzzle and the heavy handed complaints (not looking at you here SP)
