@Steve L -- My mother also did the Sunday Times puzzle and she did not have the opportunity to finish high school either. My wordsmithing, my literary chops--I thank her for all that. And I do these puzzles in her memory.
@Petrol -- Gwen Verdon danced with Bob Fosse and married him too. She was a force! Enjoy them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIiZuAVZH4w
@Kate "Second City" is another term for the city of Chicago.
@Marshall Walthew -- He also created became the image of the typical Santa Claus!
Does no one realize that "Do not cast your pearls before swine" is spoken by Jesus during the Sermon on the Mount? (Matthew 7:6) An idiom? Maybe, but originally it is a metaphor.
@Marshall Walthew I meant "what became." Do wire me when the Times allows us to edit.
@Jeanne -- Yes, this puzzle was hard on my antique eyes but so rewarding in the end!
@RL -- INTWOACTS doth annoy me too, but at least I got CHIAPET instantly. I knew someone who always gag-gifted her mother a chia pet for Christmas!
WHY WHY WHY don't we enjoy full functionality on a PC????????????? I am unable to clear a letter or word when I need to. This make a rebus puzzle a drag.
@Steve Daniel -- "The Dream of the Rood" is a famous poem of the old English period. Well, famous to English Lit majors, perhaps!
Re: the Midi Puzzle. Obviously a decision was made to withhold this puzzle on certain days of the week. May I suggest that the language of the landing page be changed? Now it says "This Page Doesn't Exist." That's really off-putting. Why not "The Puzzle Will Return Tomorrow" or some such?
@Teresa -- I remember those Want Ads too! At least we had ditched the necessity for wearing white gloves everywhere. Fun fact: another name for such an underling is the quaint "factotum."
@Heidi -- Paulina was mega-famous in her day. She got a 6 million dollar contract to be the face of Estee Lauder and was featured on countless magazine covers. Ocasek screwed her over, alas, but she's having fun these days with a YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/@PaulinaPorizkovaTV
Due to an eye condition, I view the web in dark mode. Shaded squares aren't visible for me but that's not too important, I suppose, in solving the puzzle.
@Steve L -- It works perfectly for my hubby on Android but not on his PC. But I prefer PC. (Old eyes; need big screen!)
@Seward Parker -- Did not work, alas, but I did need to update Chrome so thanks!
@Steve L -- Glorioski, I find it works fine on Firefox. Go figure!
@Times Rita -- A factotum is a "person having many diverse activities or responsibilities," according to Merriam-Webster, which adds: " . . . the word today refers to a handy, versatile sort anyone in need of an assistant might hope for."
Would anyone have preferred "popular home pregnancy test" for EPT? Probably not . . .
@Isabeau -- Ugh, I just repeated this point about LLMs. Great minds, etc.
Why can't I delete a letter in a square? I can't fill in a rebus because I can't change what I entered. And Autocheck accepts just one letter when three are needed. I hate these rebus puzzles for that reason.
@Steve L -- It's true for me! E.g., if I type a letter into a square, it cannot be expunged. I have to use autocheck, because then if the square is marked incorrect (via a slash), I can correct it. Otherwise, no dice. According to a search I did, others have this problem too.
@Cat Lady Margaret I do believe it is "ELF HAT"?
@Steve L -- Gosh, is the Times running on antediluvian 1950s TV rules? (Not that there was television before the flood . . . )
@Steve L -- And if you really want to make the guys scratch their heads: Tool for revealing if you're Blue Positive. Thanks for all the comments!
@Martin Cobern -- I wanted to key in "LLM" for Large Language Models!
