I hated it more with every non-word. Gagged on "baldish," retched at "tented," and just snorted with horror at the clue "altarations." Never heard of "The Gift That Grows," and a jingle is a musical phrase, not a phonetic one. Ugh ugh ugh.
@Mean Old Lady As a person who doesn't watch much TV or go to many movies, I saw neither "The Iron Lady" nor "The Crown." But as a person of a certain age, I remember Thatcher vividly. She and Reagan destroyed two great nations, and neither, in my opinion, has ever recovered from the devastation of the 1980s.
@Grant Yeah, IMO a lot of clues in this puzzle are just plain off. As a person of a certain age who hitchhiked regularly back in the day, I hereby testify that your thumb went out, not up. The clue for FEMININESIDE is borderline sexist. Does a TEAL "dabble" more than any other duck? And I'm 100% with you on "-core." Again, as a person of a certain age ...
Can anyone explain the title, or "theme," of this puzzle?
OMG can we please have a thousand more by this guy? My favorite puzzle in MONTHS!
I feel like I should have gotten paid for finishing this puzzle. What's the opposite of "delightful"?
I literally can't remember ever loving a puzzle so much. Often, once you get the gist, the thrill is gone. But in this puzzle the thriller just gets .... thriller. Lots of LOLs. Thank you!!
For me, this was one eyeroll after another.
Ugh. "Alop" hasn't been a word in several hundred years — if it ever was. Slang for "zip" may be either "jack" or "diddly squat," so "jack diddly squat" is redundant, meaningless, and unguessable. Awful, punny cluing. My least favorite Saturday in a year!
Loved, loved, loved this. The dopamine hit when I figured out how to solve the little box lasted hours.
Annoying, not witty, a real slog.
[expression of disgust] UGH. BLECH. ICK. GAG. YUCK.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for 8D. The ubiquitous misuse of "lay," even in hallowed publications — ahem — depresses me.
I loved this so much I didn't want to finish :)
Grinned all the way through. Wonderful puzzle! Thanks for a great Sunday morning.
@Tony Oh wait — when you tag a person, s/he's out!!!
Just totally fun. You had me at "My Sharona" and it got even better from there. Pure genius. Thanks!!
My favorite Sunday of the year so far. Lots of giggles.
@Vaer Agree. As soon as I see his name I know I'm going to have a bad time. I hate to say this but when it's over I feel the same way I do after completing a household chore.
Brilliant. Restored my good humor on a tough morning. Thank you!!
Absolutely awesome. I never wanted this puzzle to end :)
@mlw "Lurkery" is a fantastic word. Ima steal it!
I'll miss you, Deb. Happy trails!
Best. Puzzle. Ever. Happy pride!!!
Another great morning LOL at SLICED BREAD. Thank you Mr. Williams!
Fantastic fun fill and really glorious little theme. What a debut!
The most adorable puzzle ever.
Any puzzle with Biggie and anagrams is a hit with me, even though I feel that two Star Wars references are two too many.
@Rebecca Root Yup. A joyless slog.
Single rebus + silly drawing = meh, for me.
I adored this puzzle. Don't really know why. The unguessable number down the center just made it really zen for me.
Kind of annoying. Got the revealer early on, but the clues were so blah that it didn't yield a lot of joy.
@Brett I'm with you. This puzzle was anti-fun.
Loved the puzzle, but wish the cluing had been a little less strained.
First time I've ever roared with laughter and applauded when not in a theater. Awesome!!!
Time Inc! Gay men! Color me happy.
Enjoyable puzzle on a dark day. Can someone please explain 56D though?
@Dan W Agree. Between the strained puns and the trivia, it's more of a punishment than a game to finish. The New Yorker and Atlantic still have fun/hard puzzles that make you laugh instead of cringe.
Had potential for greatness. When I first figured it out, I smiled. But my fun was ruined when I found DIETICIAN misspelled, and you can't pretend that half of FLIM-FLAM means "deception." Also wish the coder had given us the option of hearing happy music by leaving in the bonus phrase letters, not just by typing in the rebuses. Finally, not highlighting cross-clues was just plain mean.
Happy baseball season to all! Love this puzzle to pieces.
Dylan Schiff, you made this classic major's day. Brilliant, fun puzzle. Thanks!
Just wonderful! What a hilarious and fun puzzle.
@D same. Not one smile, not one frisson. Just a dull slog rewarded by non-words.
What, if anything, does ECOTEUR mean? This puzzle disappointed on so many levels. I found the gimmick ridiculously easy for a Thursday and the clue misdirections humorless and forced.
