bah. My time is limited and hence so is my patience for cutesy clues that go nowhere.
Loved the gentle reminder that a simple word in English is never simple. Much thanks to the constructor for a proper Monday flex.
SCRAG is a brand new word for me. I spent a looong time trying to figure out why I was getting a nonsense syllable.
Haven't yet read the comments but if there is not a spider vs spidey sense debate, I will be disappointed. and yes, it's spidey sense. And yes, I spent a long time trying to make that work.
This was a Monday puzzle? Oh, that it was kinda off was the April Fool's Joke? Not amused >:(
Some of clues were clueless. and please, spare me your rationales on why the clues were totes ok. No, they weren't.
"Upsa"? Was mildly flummoxed by some of the answers to some of the clues but that particular one encapsulates the odd prism that this puzzles gleams through. Thank goodness one can turn to the sudoku puzzles as a chaser.
I'm the only who never heard of 'orts' before? Is it a regional word or NYT cooking section nomenclature? ps when I type in orts, autocorrect doesn't recognize it as a word, js.
Not a Wednesday puzzle. More like one on Friday.
MegaCon and not ComicCon? Pfffft.
Sunday crossword puzzles are becoming my faves: chewy yet fun.
Coming here to upvote anyone who squinted and said, "This is a Monday puzzle?" Otherwise I enjoyed it.
I had to pull up the poem and keep it side-by-side while I working out the crossword. Surely that's not cheating? ps bet somewhere high school English teachers are laughing maniacally.
DIALING? People still do that? Sorry, it had to be said. I live with young'uns.
@Mean Old Lady *gasps* My husband's grandmother was the best piemaker in southeastern Ohio. Like her mother before her, she used lard in the piecrust. ps when I make piecrust (rarely), I use butter because yeah ...
Bah. On the Apple iOS, the gamma looked nothing like a gamma. Please don't do Greek letters that don't look like Greek letters for clues.
Fun Tuesday puzzle on a Monday. So on Tuesday we'll get a Monday puzzle?
"threenager"? seriously?
Taos as the soul of the southwest? Somebody has been reading too many New Mexico travel brochures.
I enjoyed this puzzle - probably because in my misspent youth I studied Latin and Greek :)
The answer for 110A .... am I the only one here with a dirty mind?
"six Basque villagers" for a bloody civil war? Dude, I am disappoint.
Have not finished the puzzle but have gotten to the Uncle Remus/ Brer clue. No, just no. Haven't decided yet if I'm going to waste more time finishing this crossword or not.
one of the life sciences is "ecol"? Seriously? - signed an academic life scientist
@Josh Not sure. I saw your response and went back to my puzzle and ... more than half the answers had been wiped?! So I refilled in the answers and now the puzzle is seen as completed. Also now the stats show I finished the puzzle in record time :O
Sigh. No way I would have solved this with Deb Amlen's column. Thank you ma'am.
I finished the puzzle and even got the jazzy little riff upon completion and yet ... The puzzle is not indicated as complete in the archive or in the stats. Anyone know what's going on? I use a Mac IOS.
@Mary G I noticed the crossover word as well :) Like you, I did SB first and so laughed a bit when I got the middle section of today's crossword.
I'm amazed at all the folk who liked this puzzle. Good for y'all. Me? I thought the cluing was lame. Really lame. Dear mike, you can do better.
@Steve L Bro or Bruh in a different time
@Remy Easiest clue in the puzzle!
@Convoid-04 Same. I finished the puzzle, read her column, then went back to see the forest. It was a nice touch.
@CaptainQuahog said "the simple act of completing them in order, even if a day or two late, retains the streak. " I did not know this. Thanks for mentioning.
@CaptainQuahog This retired scientist has no problem with it either.
What circled square in 18-across? Doing the crossword online in Safari. I guess the NYT doesn't like Apple?
Meh. What is it about Thursday puzzles? Is it because they come just before the weekend when the working stiffs show up?
@BW I guess you're not the only one, based on the comments. However, I have one of those young males residing with me. Whilest I always say "Duuuude", he always says "Bruh!"
@SRD Yeah, I giggle-snorted as well.
@Edward My west-coast brain went immediately to AK but I couldn't think of a three letter abbreviation. So, I sighed and acceded to east coast bias.
@TC Same. I was going to tackle the circles last and was surprised to get the happy music before that.
@Erin Interesting. Probably knew getting the gamma letter printed would be too tricky. Wish they had realized that for us solving via the digital edition.
@Steve L That puzzle used a different part of the brain :) Thanks for the link.
@Linda Jo thanks. I did scroll through the comments before commenting but found no reference to Uncle Remus. Sorry to have missed those conversations.
@retired, with cats So why include that clue? What am I missing ?Why would NYT editors think that a reference to slavery would be fab?
@JayTee Thanks very much for your input.
@CaptainQuahog Life science majors at the University of California do not include ecology. But hey, the NYT crossword has never pretended to be a puzzle for anyone outside of the northeast, so there is that. -signed an academic (emiratus) physical biochemist whose areas of expertise are biochemistry and physical chemistry.
