what a search says about "meep" vs. "beep": "The Road Runner says both "meep" and "beep" depending on the version. The original sound was a "meep meep," recorded by animator Paul Julian, but "beep beep" later became the official version to match the theme song and sounds of the car horn on the Plymouth Roadrunner car. The "Meep Meep" Era Origin: The phrase originated with Paul Julian, an animator for the cartoons. Inspiration: Julian would say "meep, meep" to avoid bumping into colleagues in the studio. Adoption: His voice was recorded and sped up to become the Road Runner's iconic sound. Preference: Julian's preferred spelling was "hmeep hmeep" or "mweep, mweep". The "Beep Beep" Era Theme Song: The theme song, "Beep Beep," solidified this sound as official. Car Inspiration: The phrase also mimicked the horn of the Plymouth Road Runner car from the 1960s. Official Status: "Beep beep" became the accepted catchphrase, even in official YouTube videos of the character."
Mr. Chafflin, happy for your and your friend's survival of a terrible event and that the therapy is helping you heal. Congratulations on your considerable crossword achievements! My happy crossword memory is very recent: starting solving them to avoid the 2024 election news. So much better for mental health.
This puzzle creator included the joy, playfulness, and fun an crossword puzzle can create in the solver. Thank you!
There's clever that's annoying and there's clever that's fun. This one was fun!
@Nancy J. And weeping.
Got it, finally but very painful for this dyslexic. My first and last cat, a former feral, would eat only that particular cat food. He would come and sit in my lap and loudly purr, but if I tried to pet him he'd rake me viciously. I loved him anyway. He may have liked me somewhat.
What's deep in a pit? Good one!
2D was instant if you've read the Aubrey-Maturin series. I re-read it this past year to avoid political news. In that vein, the next few days make ___ Pro Noblis appropriate.
@Teresa They can forge an alloyance!
@Andrzej Sorry about Jorge. Labs are so loving. They make the world a better place. We lost Boris on Friday after nearly 14 wonderful years. The pain of the loss is the price to pay for all the joy, love, and laughter of having a dog in our life. Even though the heartbreak is excruciating, on balance it is a small price to pay.
Clue for 18A, cute! A straightforward puzzle to provide some distraction in these anxious days.
Fun clues, like 21A, made me smile. We need that. Thank you!
@Nancy J. Yes indeed. It is after all also MLK day.
@Mike thanks for making the day more pun.
I knew peanuts are legumes, not nuts. It appears almonds are not "true" nuts, either. "A true nut is a dry fruit with a hard shell that covers a single seed. Almonds are seeds that grow inside a fleshy fruit called a drupe". Macadamia nuts also grow inside a fleshy fruit called a drupe. Ditto for cashews and yes, pistachios. Crosswords are educational.
@James T practice makes them easier and easier.
@Marshall Walthew Gives extra time to re-read "Ain't I A Woman?". Plenty of "resistance" (in a difference sense), in that speech.
Fun puzzle but Mr. K. please spend your vacation time with your family!
I knew 62 across right away, and went looking for Dill, Kosher, Gherkin...it left me sour.
Chignon, cool!
It was fun. Smiles for clues to 63A, 30A, 69A. Thank you for a good Tuesday puzzle. And I like donezo!
@Jess Add that nail polish brand to the list please.
14A. The clue [Permanent location?] refers not to a building or other structure At first I thought it would be GRAVE. :(
It was really fun! Thank you.
@Cat Lady Margaret Remember there will be several intervening trips to the hardware store. And who has the power in the couple?
I was hoping the answer to 22A would be "hoe". Because a hoe is often used as a hoe.
The theme clues were fun. Thank you for a smooth, charming solve.
Did not know that about 41A. Their larva are gluttonous predators--you want the adults to lay eggs in your garden to really eliminate aphids. As adults they are mostly flying around looking for sex.
@Mike You always end with a clothing line.
Many fun clues and answers. Thank you!
Many clues were delightfully sneaky. Great puzzle, thank you!
Fun clues, fun answers. Thank you! Alternate common name for Ardea ibis "cattle egret" is "buff backed egret" --learned a new thing. An Ardea alba "Great egret" landed in our garden last week, lost, staggering and exhausted from trying to fly in the horrific Santa Ana winds. We left it to recover. Hopefully it did.
@Mike You are being waggish.
I didn't know that about Milan.
@Wark Would you be interested in adding the west coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California to Canada?
@Bill Yes, dust, but as Bill Nye said, star dust!
Good puzzle. Great comments!
Fun one, thank you! No double platinum hip-hop albums or HBO series actors to search for. . For a minute there I hoped 52A would be PITTSBURGH, but not enough spaces.
@Mike You make a lot of cents.
@Francis Awaiting, and hoping for, GULFOFMEXICO
@Ms. Billie M. Spaight "pig latin": For words starting with consonants or Y, put the first letter of the word at its end, and then add ay. For words beginning with A, E, I, O or U, "way" is added as an ending. So, "au" being prounounced "oh", put that after lait which is prounounced "lay", but take away the "ay" and you L + "oh", or "low". I'm really just explaining this to myself.
A salute to this by flags flown at half maths
@Beverly Johnson My English is pretty fluid after a glass of wine or two.
@Geoff Offermann Trump's Ark. He renamed it.
@Briana You seem en-RAY-ged. Hope the rest of your day gets better
@john ezra Thank you for this!
@Joe P Could slow down solvers a bit with "Petty or cat"?
@Andrzej My very first job--a co-worker had immigrated from Poland around the end of the 80's and I asked her about her experience coming to the US. She said her most striking moment was walking into a grocery store (no guards, no line!) absolutely filled with food, free to buy something, anything. She said she'd never forget it. That to her was freedom.
@Lewis Yes I love the "How did I know something I don't know?"s
@HeathieJ Crossword puzzles enable us to discover we know things we didn't know we knew.
