Some of the clues had a question mark after it. For me they all could have.
I’m sure this was difficult to construct, but sadly I found it impossible to understand the theme, so needed Deb's explanation. I never would have caught on no matter how long I tried. At least I wasn’t alone. Well done to those who figured it out.
I’m glad I kept on reading the comments and found out I wasn’t alone in finding this puzzle too difficult to be enjoyable. But I’m also glad so many liked it as it was obviously difficult to construct.
I woke up, turned on the news and was instantly completely depressed. It helped a bit to have this fine puzzle to concentrate on. I really enjoyed gradually seeing how the fun theme emerged. An excellent puzzle and just right for a Wednesday I think. Well done Adam
Gosh, even more complaints when there isn’t a rebus ( or similar trick), and some of them quite mean which is totally unnecessary in my opinion. I thought the theme fun, but then I like a good pun. I’ll be happy to see more from August.
Quite a variety of entries which makes an interesting solve, although a bit tough for a Tuesday for me, but that seems to be the case virtually all the time now. In just over a week I’ll be visiting my family in California and will no doubt be seeing the baby proofed homes of my four great-grandchildren.
How lovely to have my favorite kind of puzzle on my birthday. I’m definitely thankful , Ricky.
Great Thursday puzzle. I was among those who thought we were supposed to leave the HOLES blank, but when I didn’t get the happy music I entered the HOLE rebus. This was definitely a fun puzzle for a rebus lover. It’s been a while since we’ve had such a good one. Many thanks, Hanh.
Perfect Thursday puzzle in my opinion. I did struggle to see the theme for quite a while, so a great AHA moment when I finally saw how it worked and I loved the graphics at the end. Hopefully no one will get mad at you , Dan , or send hate mail. It’s shocking when people do that.
I never notice anything unusual in the clues and today was no exception. That must have been difficult. Nice to see KAMALA (31A) in the puzzle and hope to see her in D.C. for a good while longer.(Am I allowed to say that?) This was just about right for a Wednesday for me, and I enjoyed it, Maryellen.
I was delighted to have a Wednesday rebus puzzle, but do have sympathy for those who are not fans. I especially like it when the whole rebus entry fits the square as it did today. Perhaps Sam's excellent column will convince a few rebus haters to give them a chance. Loved it, Robert. Looking forward to more.
TO BE HONEST I struggled even more than usual on a Saturday, but did hit a 2,000 streak for Wordle.
I loved everything about this just right for a Sunday puzzle. The double meanings for all the theme entries were great. I even loved Daniel's constructor notes. My favourite Sunday since I can remember.
Thank goodness there wasn’t a chorus of “ far too easy for a Saturday “ . I did find that pausing and returning to the puzzle helped, but still need lots of help. Not complaining, it is Saturday after all.
I was thinking that even the Mondays are getting quite difficult, but about halfway through I remembered that it was April 1, always tricky. I finally got the trick at 39D, laughed out loud and went on to figure out the rest. Loved the trick, thanks, Alan.
A great variety of entries and fun clues. My favorite was 47A, (possibly because I got it straight away. ) I also liked the nice comment that Carolyn made about Lewis who always writes such an excellent comment.
The word FUN has appeared in very many of the comments (sadly sometimes preceded by “no”) and that was my first reaction to this really enjoyable rebus puzzle, loved it. A perfect Thursday treat, many thanks Paolo and Sarah.
I loved the puzzle and was pleased that so many did as well, not always the case for a rebus puzzle. I also loved Rena's notes. Yet again I can say that I’m looking forward to more from this fine new constructor.
You should be proud, Matthew, and I certainly had fun solving your puzzle. Getting my first BACK was a great AHA moment and of course it was fun to get the others. It was almost as good as a rebus, my absolute favorite. Definitely looking forward to more.
I’m really pleased that everyone loved this incredible Monday puzzle as much as I did. To create a Monday puzzle as interesting as this is and keep it quite easy to solve takes a lot of effort I’m sure, so many thanks, Jeremy.
What a great Monday puzzle. Fun theme, interesting fill, good clues and all managing to stay at a Monday level. And what a perfect reveal! Come back soon, Tom.
I don’t know how she does it, but Andrea always makes a Monday puzzle interesting, so glad that Daniel asked for her assistance. I didn’t need to say CHEESE to make me smile as I solved this puzzle.
What a delightful Wednesday puzzle! An interesting grid, fun theme, great variety of entries, and for me it brought back memories of 2014 when the Tour de France started in Harrogate. Well done, Hal. I enjoyed reading your notes as well.
When a rebus {EA} for IKEA didn’t work at 42D I was really puzzled. This is one of the most complicated puzzles I’ve ever encountered, too much for me I’m afraid even using auto correct after my first run through the puzzle.
I seem to be finding quite a few of the puzzles harder than the day they appear, and today was no exception. Nothing wrong with the puzzle, very clever theme and lots of interesting entries and I’m certainly impressed with Howard’s efforts. Hopefully the next one won’t take as long to be accepted.
I think it’s difficult to get the level of difficulty right on a Wednesday, but today’s puzzle seems just about spot on, so a nice debut. Looking forward to more from E. M.
Not easy for me (surprise surprise) but a lot of fun. WINE PAIRING was my first theme entry (no surprise). I struggled to get the rest, and again very impressed by the clever clueing. Well done, Parker.
Well, I hope we don’t have to wait another 5 years for a puzzle from Todd. This was a lot of fun and just right for a Wednesday.
When I lived in New York City I often went to the MOMA just to stare at THE STARRY NIGHT for a while. Loved the puzzle, favorite Sunday for a while. So fun to see those wonderful paintings gradually emerge.
I’m so pleased that so many had as much fun as I did with this delightful Sunday puzzle. Loved the puns. And also liked TSAR as clued which I thought so clever. Not much more to say, thanks for such a fun Sunday puzzle, looking forward to more, Ginny.
A very tough Saturday puzzle, needing lots of help as always, but I did find it useful to take small breaks. Each time I did I noticed something I’d missed before when I came back to it. Now I’m ready for a nap.
OH COOL I loved all the theme entries, each one brought a smile as I figured it out, can’t ask for much more than that. Also just about right for a Wednesday. Looking forward to your next one, Barbara.
So much fun from start to finish, and just right for a Wednesday I think. I always enjoy seeing EMUS as an entry, part of the fun. Come back soon, Hanh.
I don’t find this as easy as most, (no surprise) but really enjoyed it, especially the long entries. I was surprised it was a debut and look forward to more from Henry. Adding my best wishes to Deb, such a miserable time to feel poorly.
I’m really pleased that more solvers are enjoying a rebus puzzle. This was quite a tricky one for me, but very satisfying to solve. Thanks , Simeon.
Wow, what a terrific theme filled puzzle, and in my opinion just right for a Wednesday. I’m definitely looking forward to more from Luke
More fun than usual for a Friday, liked the grid and the long entries, was pleased with getting ARE YOU DECENT with only a couple of letters. Hoping for more from Larry, especially on a themeless day.
What a perfect theme for a fun Monday puzzle. I noticed the homophones fairly quickly which helped to get the rest of them. I was surprised that it was a debut, very impressive indeed, and yet another new constructor to welcome. Looking forward to your next one, Margi.
@dutchiris , I wish I could give you a few recommendations, great comment.
I like a puzzle with a lot of theme entries, so had fun with this one. It also seemed just about right for a Wednesday . I bet Jeffrey and Will could do a great Thursday puzzle as well.
Alway enjoy a rebus puzzle, and this puzzle also had my favorite painting. When I lived in New York I often went to the MoMA to gaze at The Starry Night. Great Thursday puzzle, Hanh.
Now even the Mondays are getting difficult for me, but I’m not complaining as I know the majority would like that. I especially enjoyed the constructors notes today, and look forward to more puzzles from Thomas.
Great start to the New Year with yet another fine debut puzzle. I was not familiar with the first 2 theme entries which slowed me down a bit, not a bad thing on a Monday. I keep forgetting what dates the various Gens are, I think I’m before they existed(1937). Looking forward to more from Harry and another year with everyone enjoying the puzzles and comments.
Off to a great start with GLASS THERMOMETER , but it slowed down a lot after that, lots of unknowns or couldn’t think of. I missed having a trick, but it was fun to have LABOUR and LIBDEM in the puzzle.
One of my most fun AHA moments when I caught on to how the theme worked. Very impressive construction. Thanks, Joseph for my favorite Wednesday puzzle for a long time. ( maybe for ever)
Knowing that it is Earth Day explains why it is a bit trickier than a typical Monday. It certainly was a lot of fun; I really enjoyed the ladder. Definitely looking forward to more from David.
A delightful puzzle followed up by delightful notes from the young constructor, what a great start to the week. I don’t usually have to feed the emus, but perhaps I need to now as my brief comment hasn’t appeared.
I was quite pleased that I knew a pop singer at 55D straight away. Oh well .
I liked the nice neat grid. A typical Friday for me, needed a fair amount of help, maybe not quite as much as usual. Well done, Alex, hopefully there will be many more.
I loved the theme, so didn’t mind the lack of trickery. I’ve read all the books, but years ago and don’t remember much at all about them. My poor memory is definitely a factor in needing help with most of the puzzles, but I still enjoy them. It was a “Fun solving experience” , Katie
