I do have some nits, which I shall keep to myself, because… that was delightful! Such fun!
Bravo! As Puzzlemucker said, this is a Sunday for the ages. Brilliant and fun puzzle. Thank you.
@Patti Career is a lesser-known synonym of careen.
Bravo! What a puzzle! One very small nit: the Tarot major arcana begins with 0 (The Fool), not 1 (The Magician).
I am imagining the constructor as slap-happy as I am from the heatwave we’re suffering through. What a ridiculous puzzle. I loved it.
That effect at the end (on the app, at least) was worth the gnashing of teeth required to get through this puzzle! Felt like a Thursday to me.
Breezy and so fun! I had TUCHUS for TUSHIE for a while…
@Artemis I’d like to also mention my recently-late brother-in-law, a deeply moral man and one of the original Trekkies. I think he would have loved this puzzle.
This was delightful. I have a soft spot for giraffes, and was happy to see OKAPI included as well! I do agree that ELKS only makes sense in terms of the fraternal organization. You wouldn’t say DEERS, now, would you?
Ok— this was delightful. “MAKING AN IMP ACT” was my favorite. I was actually able to get “LOVE HOT EL” with no crosses once I understood the theme! I did have FRA instead of DOM for way too long. Luckily, I turned off the timer feature a few weeks ago; makes for a pleasanter solve.
Wheee! That was fun. I loved getting out paper and pen and figuring the anagrams out, as in olden times.
I was wondering why in the world they thought REM did Blitzkreig Bop… everyone of a certain age knows that was the Ramones! Of course that would make PEELED which I knew couldn’t have passed editing… That was quite an aha moment when I finally got it. Kudos— that was fun.
@Charles The only one of those I had trouble with was AODAI (and originally had MAY). Hardly a trainwreck. Anyway, it’s a Thursday. They’re supposed to be tricky.
@Sean HALEBOPP is far from obscure for some of us. I have vivid memories of observing it from the streets of San Francisco. It was wild.
@MAR1 According to Mirriam-Webster: “Yiddish finf: five” I know it was slang in the NY area in the 50s; my dad used it often. Same with “sawbuck” for 10s.
Sorry, but if I wanted to deal with numbers, I’d do… some other puzzle. Also, if I have to get up off the couch to find a pen and paper to do sums… you’ve lost me.
Loved it! I knew a guy with a webbed toe. He had a tattoo on it that looked exactly like the scissor/broken line graphic in today’s puzzle. It was disconcerting
@Sam This is middle-school mathematics, in a Sunday NYT puzzle. No glossary needed.
Woo hoo! That was fun, and I almost finished without lookups! Saturdays are normally out of my league.
Fun! I got stuck for a while, until the theme clicked. Then it whizzed by! A+ for MANHATTAN HOOK UP
@Beth Sadly, he said he was retiring from the puzz. Whether it was because of the naysayers is unclear.
I know BOLT, but had WOLF for way too long.
That was so much fun… and now I’m hungry! Brava!
Loved this puzzle— could not put it down! Kudos.
For a moment I was thinking, oh no— not more Star Wars! But I quickly figured out that the theme was a great love of mine, the original Star Trek. I was delighted with the theme; found the fill just a little clunky. Nonetheless an enjoyable solve— thank you!
@Sam (It means “dish is to dirt, as ____ is to tea”)
@Erica The difference is that you lose your gold star if you use Check Puzzle
@Jane Wheelaghan Somehow it fits the word, by extending its length with vowels!
@Jon (Pedant hat on) *principle ;-)
@Artemis Never mind. A bit of research was… enlightening.
@Helen Wright What are the odds?!? Lovely story.
@maya and ant “Less” as in minus— “taking off” as in subtracting.
Absolutely loved this puzzle. Bravo!
@MFSTEVE Obscure? Since when is Agatha Christie’s most well- known character obscure?
@Hardroch Why. Why would you sow more rancor and discontent into the world.
@Eddie But why, Eddie? I’m a big fan.
@Francis You might want to look into the history of the song. George and the boys were about to be bankrupt due to the new Labor tax structure. He also objected to that money going to military weapons. It’s also a scathingly funny critique of British tax laws, which are… rather eccentric.
@Mady To actually answer your question: the calls cows make are called lows.
@Jon I’m Gen X and I knew Cousin ITT… but he’s also in the puzzle at least once a week
@Katrina On your keyboard: go to “More” You’ll find “Rebus” Hit that, and you should see a yellow box around the letter-box Proceed At least that’s how it is on iOS
@H On iOS, you can hit the “i” button in the upper right, next to the gear icon.
Wow! I took two clues from the column, but I still can’t believe I finished it! Nice chewy Saturday
@Captain Quahog Are you thinking of G-spot? Because otherwise, I’m struggling to make sense of your comment.
@Grant David Mitchell is a treasure.
@Ragland The most memorable scene in the film, aside from the spaghetti scene.
