Cute puzzle theme. Some of the puns make sense. Some went over my head. Aria kidding left me scratching my head. Aside from that, I had ADO inst of DIN, which threw that corner off
OLEO must be a regional thing. Margarine was just margarine when i was growing up. Cross that with an obscure HALLEYBOPP, and the section became a slog for me. I'll echo what everyone else said about NOES. The puzzle was clever, but the execution could use some polishing.
This wasn't a difficult puzzle. The nonsensical answers were easy enough to fill in. I had to back to study the puzzle to make any sense of it after reading the Wordplay blog. Even at that point, it was a "look I get it" moment that landed with more of a thud and an aha. Hats off to anyone who can construct a times crossword puzzle. However, when I have to study the puzzle to get the revealed, and go down the sides in order to see hofits together, together, it leaves me cold. It was fun enough without needing to be cute.
Cute theme, but overall not a fan of this one. Antifa is just the start.
I've never hears of a shower beer. Why the heck would I drink a beer in a shower? Functional lcoholism rules, I guess. I have no clue what peripeteia, other than the apparebtly means the stated clue for such. I found no personality in this puzzle, despite Mr. McGowan's claim that the constructor's personality was all over the puzzle. I'll politely assume that he didn't mean that the constructors is conceited. I love Friday crosswords, but this one left me cold.
A lot of skill went into making an underwhelming puzzle. Easy enough to solve, but too gimmicky.
This was a clever puzzle, but a bit complicated to enter. With my big thumbs, it's easy to make typos. With such a complicated grid to fill in, it was hard to find the typos, so I had to check the puzzle to figure it out. Oh well.
Fridays have become my favorite puzzle. I'm enjoying these themeless puzzles more and more as the themed revelers have gotten cluttered of late. I enjoyed this one. It wasn't overly difficult. I just took some patience to solve.
Short snd sweet. MOUE threw me. That's a new one for me. My mind went to MOPE.
This was clever without being gimmicky. No overkill, like alotofrexent puzzles. I enjoyed this one. It took a moment for the theme to click.
I appreciate the effort and construction, but these complicated fills make it near impossible when I'm looking for typos. Meh!
I manged ro power my way through this one. MEWL threw me. Never heard of a BETATRON. On another note, what's up with the mini Puzzle today? I get GOLDENGATE, but the graphic doesn't make any sense.
I haven't finished the crossword. I finished the midi don't get "as literally seen in this clue?" There's a theme, but i don't get it.
Meh! Crash blossom? Sounds like fake news. This puzzle was well stacked, but left me cold.
The puzzle was enjoyable. The revealed was a groaned. This feels like every other puzzle of late. There's too much going on with the theme, especially for a Monday. What ever happened to subtlety?
This puzzle wasn't too difficult. Hiwever, it felt overly ambitious for a Monday puzzle.
@Barry Ancona C-store went completely over my head, so no. Looking up c-store gave me a database reference, which left me even more clueless. Thanks for clarifying.
Are we supposed to count the number of answers that are missing T's? I love Thursday puzzles, but this was the most tedious slog of unenjoyable puzzle that I've done in weeks. Great job of construction, but this one offered no enjoyment. I feel like a wasted an hour by force if will to finish it and call it a day.
Puzzle was appropriately challenging for a Wednesday. The theme easy, at least as far REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE are concerned. The rest of the theme felt like a kitchen sink approach with a lot of everything thrown in. It feels like overkill. I enjoyed the puzzle, but gave up on trying to make sense of all of the highlighted and circled squares. Even the explanation in the Wordplay blog felt overly complicated. Maybe this is all like missing the humor of an inside joke.
The puzzle was fun enough. However, it feels like another "everything but the kitchen sink" puzzle after the fact. I'm sure there was a lot Skill that went into constructing the puzzle, but there have been a lot of recent puzzles where the constructorsare trying to do too much.
This was anything easy solved, and a cute theme. My only nit pick here is that plus would have made more sense than plus sign, since the answer is equal, and not equal sign. Open paren and question mark make sense. Otherwise, a fun solve.
Clever, I guess, but not a fan. The visual clue for 42 across was a total bust. How the raised font in the games app is supposed to equate to MINI evades me. I get how the fits the these, but the clue is a stretch.
It was a fast enough solve, but the nuances i tended by the ci structorwhen over my head. I still don't get it, even after reading the blog. I'll just scratch my head in ignorance.
This felt more like a Monday puzzle.
It was an easy puzzle for a Wednesday. I admit the theme went over my head. Even after reading the Wordplay blog, I had to look up the move titles on IMDB to make sense of it. Still fun.
I can only call this one tedious. Even after looking up "c-store" I'm still clueless about the answer. That set the tone for me for this puzzle.
Finally, a straightforward puzzle without gimmicks. Funny that one the answers in today's Puzzle is apparently banned for use in this forum. Using it when commenting on a puzzle earlier this week stopped my comment from being approved. Pointing it out earlier today stopped my comment from being published. I'd love to hear Barry's comments on that subject. (Hopefully this one isn't banned.)
@Lynn One of the comments was in Wednesday. I understand that a bot is reviewing them and approving or denying them. If a comment from Wednesday hasn't been approved by now, it's not likely to ever get approved. At this point, it's no longer timely. I've avoided using that "phrase" just for this reason, and usually substitute something with heck. It's still overkill.
Just chaĺlenging enough. One person had an issue with overarching. Ive never heard the term used, but, sure enough, the definition is overhand. Fair enough. I've also never heard of, or perhaps forget hearing of, a viol. And I'm totally unfamiliar with lothario. So that small section was for me the toughest. The rest were easy to plod through.
@John Thanks. Figuring that.oit took more time than the clever, regular Sunday puzzle. Much appreciated. 🎉
@MB That one definitely feels forced.
Going through the puzzle after the fact, I found some enjoyable intersections. However, while working through, it felt to me that this was another tedious puzzle in a week of tedious puzzles. I'm not throwing shade at the constructors, but this week I felt like I had to slog my way through all of the puzzles. I'll see what this weekend brings and hope that for a reset next week.
Cute enough. Much ado about nothing.
Oddly enough, this puzzle was easier and took less tome to solve than the mini. I get the 4 across/1 down combo for the mini, but the 1 down clue makes no sense. This is the weakest cluing I've seen yet.
@Molly Got it! I read the Wordplay explanation twice to no avail. Clever! At least it's a simple twist, even the "literal center of a visitor center" obfuscated the reveal. Too many words get in the way of the important words. My hats off to Scott Hogan, but shame on Sean McGowan for a poorly written Wordplay. Thanks
@Captain Quahog I'm not young, but I remember my mother talking aboit more than one staple that needed color mixed in. She mentioned that with cheese. Oleomargarine is still well before my time. It's an obscure reference to me.
@Artemis I lived in San Francisco during the "Halley Bopp" time frame. I heard nothing about it. What is obscurity to one person may often be a fond memory for someone else. For me, since I have no memory, find or otherwise, it falls into the obscurity category.
@Rich in Atlanta Thanks for.pointing that out. I guess I'm just ignorant, and should be ashamed dor expressing a point of view. I stand admonished and corrected. Silly me for thinking that I could habe a valid point to make. I'll refrain in the future and bask in the superior vocabularies and intellects of the puzzles elitists here.
I'm guessing that at some future date, OLEO will will make its 881st appearance, and I'll immediately know the answer, thanks to the towering intellect of @Rich in Atlanta. Of course, I'll refrain from commenting on this future puzzle, to save myself the embarrassment of once again being cowered by such a towering intellect.
