Nice Monday puzzle. I’m tired of complaints about Saturday’s puzzle. Puzzles of that caliber are what make and give the NYT crossword its deserved reputation. Sam Ezersky is an all-star and does yeoman ‘s work on a daily basis on the Bee.
@Chrissy I was in my late twenties and visiting my parents for the weekend. The Times was delivered outside their apartment door early Sunday morning. I woke up very early that day, started the coffee and got the paper. I opened the NYT magazine to the puzzles page. I was able to complete the Crossword and Acrostic before they got up. When my Dad sat down at the dining table, I very proudly gave him the completed puzzles and told him that this was evidence that the money they invested in my expensive liberal arts education was well-spent. My Dad just smiled. Thank you for bringing forth this very fond memory.
Dear Deb: Thank you for sharing this loving tribute. May his memory be a blessing. I, too, would do the Sunday crossword with Dad. One of the proudest moments for both of us happened a few years after college. I went to visit my parents at their condo. Early Sunday morning I got the NYT from outside the door where it was delivered. When my Dad came into the kitchen somewhat later, I was able to present to him the completed crossword and the acrostic(this was close to 50 years ago). He looked at it and then me and smiled and said I guess that liberal arts education was not wasted.
Considering the creator’s age, the original clues, and it being a Saturday, I suggest this is in the running for POY. Solving this puzzle was a true delight once again reaffirming the pre-eminent position of the NYT in crossword land.
I had the pleasure of going to a Star Trek convention in NYC in the mid-seventies. A carful of friends drove up from Philadelphia. Harlan Ellison spoke about his episode , The City on the Edge of Forever. The cast of that episode included Joan Collins. Leonard Nimoy also discussed Mr. Spock. As an aside, and of only slightly less enjoyment, we then went to Chinatown for dinner.
Why do people overuse the great XW word Natick, when they just didn’t know the answers
Thanks Caitlyn for the Theseus explanation and reference. This is the kind of thing that educates and makes the Th, Fri and Sat puzzles in the NYT well worth the subscription
Again, puzzles like this make the NYT xword the cream of the crop
Random walk reminded me of Burton Malkiel’s book A Random Walk Down Wall Street. Isn’t this what we’ve experienced the last two days due to TarriffMan
I’m very tired of rap singer clues. As a septuagenarian, I’m sure it’s age related.
@Eddie I’m very tired of this repetitive comment
Constructing this puzzle while pursuing MD/ PHD is quite impressive. Bravo
A phrase that has stayed with me that I heard in a first semester American Lit class over 50 years ago was that true erudition is more than mere pedANTry
No one I know ever bought Natty Ice as a budget Budweiser beer. It was Natural Light or Busch. In college we drank cheap beers like Genesee or Schaefer, $4 per case. In graduate school we drank PBR.
@Nancy A few years ago at a doctor’s office waiting room the patient next to me was doing the NYT crossword in pen. It happened to be a Friday. I commented about his doing it in pen. The fellow misogynist replied I let my wife do the easy days, M-W, and she uses pencil. As far as I know, they’re still married!
As per Yogi: When you come to a fork in the road, take it. Does this get you on Frost’s One Less Traveled By.
When the facts change, I change my mind. Attributed to Keynes.
@BJ. Endue is a Spelling Bee word
I am very reluctant to comment in light of the skills of many solvers, but this was far too easy for a Thursday puzzle.
The fruit punch clue reminded me of the punch we made when I was in chemistry grad school. We repurposed the absolute alcohol that was used in our research projects and mixed it with grape juice resulting in so-called Purple Jesus, drink enough and it was heavenly.
A Moveable Feast, as per Hemingway
You are entitled to your opinions, but you are not entitled to your facts. Moynihan
@Ratio 5 Clearly, it was your Crime and Punishment to finish the puzzle
I found this to be the easiest Saturday in a long time, and I usually struggle with lots of look-ups
Bartelby the Scrivener, one of my favorites. Learning of Charivarus and the like are one of the reasons for doing the NYT xword. It’s never too late to learn.
@Jeb Jones In the Spelling Bee game Arhat has come up frequently, as I’ve painfully learned
@Dave S. In line with article on raw-dogging in today’s NYT
@coloradoz. There’s a very non-PC similar joke: Jeet yet? No, jew.
@Marshall Walthew. Earlier reference to Bartleby in NYT this week was by Bret Stephens. I also would prefer not to.
Alexander McCall Smith always has Auden references in his Dalhousie series, and I’m sure others. From Fall of Rome to September 1939, what a time span and how prescient.
@Heidi In the Dinner Party episode, a black and white cookie led to the end of Jerry’s non-vomit streak. Maybe he should have had the babka, either chocolate or cinnamon, instead.
@Fact Boy. Agree with Sotto Voce. Your erudition is not mere pedantry.
1. Karz’s pastrami, say no more 2. I’ll have what she’s having
@john ezra Maybe Jane could ride Frou-Frou
@C-64 A misogynist friend told me he only does Th-F-S and ‘lets’ his wife do the easy days
@Helen. Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived. Wives of Henry VIii
Is there a way on Xword info to access the past puzzles that are referred to without their solutions
