It's right there in the song, people. NONE is the loneliest number that you'll ever do Two can be as bad as none It's the loneliest number since the number none I'll get my coat.
Who knew that Wyoming and Montana have the same number of letters as Alberta.
Me, confidently entering characters from This is Spinal Tap after seeing the mini Stonehenge.
@joel88s Phil Ochs isn't exactly obscure.
8A is a great word. Someone called me a "downwardly mobile ersatz intellectual" in an online comment section once. I know what they meant, but it still makes almost no sense.
Revenge is a dic best served cold.
Shame about open endeD. SDS is easy enough to clue. Bet it makes a comeback in the near future.
@kv450 Did you bother to read any of the comments explaining it?
Can we do a uey or a uee or anything really, as long as it's a reversal, on uie? Please?
Thought it was a bit weird that there is a musical set in the HOV lane but anything is possible these days and to drive in one you usually need at least two passengers so it seemed ok, plus my knowledge of musicals is quite limited. (Cha Cha, Wave...)
@Dave S For that you have to have NUTZ in 30A.
Re 21A, a quick survey of Wikipedia let's me know that Kix and Trix were introduced by General Mills, which bought Chex in '97. In the 80s I would go to my grandparents after school, have some Rice Chex for a snack, and watch M*A*S*H reruns with grandad. Good memories.
@Larg The times on xwstats are not representative at all. It's people who bother to link their accounts and upload stats, which isn't going to be the average solver by some margin.
@Pat non fungible token. Better to not know.
@Chrisinroch That is jury tampering. Jury rigging is correct, as clued in the puzzle. Jerry rigging is widespread but wrong. (Which I suppose makes it right enough.)
Quite pleased to see 24A... as someone who actually makes their living computing Euler characteristics.
@John Bradley The PNW isn't just Seattle and BC, you know. It's drained by the Snake. It counts.
Lower fifty eight, Lars? You've been out of the country too long.
ALOP is in the OED so even though it's terrible I guess we have to take it. More importantly, I have an extra fifteen minutes to listen to my mother's kvetching since it is evidently Wednesday Christmas again.
No Doubt about it, one of the better Mondays.
Great puzzle with lots of misdirection! A small part of me wants it to be ASG, which I know is wrong, but on the other hand, the term is AttorneyS General.
That thing is called a peel??
@Bill whitney And somebody forgot to capitalize the first letter of your surname.
Nice puzzle. Had AGAR for ALPO since bacteria need to eat too.
@Ιασων People say hit the head for use the loo all the time in the States.
This puzzle definitely gets an E for effort.
Somebody definitely dropped the pile of puzzles on the way to the printer this week and got the days mixed up!
Had SQUARES at 97A for the longest time, thinking that's a bit mean to the chess nerds but sure why not?
So it's not FALLOPIAN after all.
How do I get the puzzle app to go back to opening the column in the regular nyt app the way it used to? When I read the comments I often want to go look at the puzzle but now I can't without losing my place!
Hail Mary? This puzzle is more like hail Mary Jane!
Stunned that somebody flagged my Monty Python joke about Pontius Pilates' friend and the maximum. Jeeze.
First, I want to apologize for last week's threads potatogate. Hopefully the following food fact will make up for it: in Australia they have something called "the lot", which you can order your burger with - the usual stuff, then bacon, egg, so far so good, and ... pineapple and beets.
Great fun, though I think I prefer Bootsy Collins to Gerry Whoisthat.
Tripped up by those pesky Jama's. Our strong arms be our conscience, swords our law. March on. Join bravely. Let us to it pell mell, If not to heaven, then hand in hand to hell.
Apparently NIN has appeared 113 times but only once as the band that brought us Closer. I'm sure Anias and Henry would have appreciated it.
@Turing These are actually known as the "Indiana ninths", just like 3 is the Indiana pi.
Maybe I am just a dork, but I thought logomania was something everybody here suffers (?) from.
@Mr Dave I received a comic sans rejection letter for a tenure track job once. It is now one of my prized possessions, if an email can be a prized possession.
@Joe P Don't drink out of that please.
Cannot believe the slur at 32 across made it past the editors!
Slime takes me back... Went down a little YouTube rabbit hole. Didn't remember that Alanis Morissette was in a few episodes of You Can't Do That on Television. Funny.
@Gareth I was there two weeks ago. Incredible place. Saw a cheetah with two cubs.
@Melis Being that parochial about food terminology will not help your case, I'm afraid. This is pretty a common usage in the states, and is often associated with Greek cuisine.
Here's the Jonathan Richman song about 17A: https://youtu.be/qTLsfZk-FpE?si=VcoVUvsQEh7ltOP9 I was dancing in a....
@Shekhar It's one of those obviously incorrect but well established things that we do, yes.
Really wanted to stretch HERDINGCATS to fill 31A but it wasn't to be. The left side was tough!
Did not know the Cha Cha Slide, which apparently means I've never been to a wedding and didn't attend middle school. Explains some things.
