Fun puzzle! One of these days I'm going to have to watch the original movie, the remake, and the musical...I wonder what happens when you WATCH Beetlejuice 3x in a row? 👀
I started solving crosswords earlier this year. I started doing all the Mondays in the archives for past couple of years, then made my way down the days of the week. I am SO CLOSE to solving Sundays without lookups...there's always a couple each of the past few weeks. I was feeling like today would be the day, but FLUE and LENT TO tripped me up. ARGG.
This puzzle delivered tricks AND treats! I got stuck in the northwest corner but otherwise it was a graveyard smash! (BTW, someone told me today that we've never actually heard the song 'Monster Mash' -- only a song ABOUT the mash. That will keep me up tonight...Happy Cabbage Night, brain!)
I really hated this puzzle. I this this is the worst puzzle I've played this year. I'm glad others had fun!
I got the trick with Clydesdake and enjoyed the gimmick. (Though I had Polar as Panda for the longest time). I just found some of the other clues difficult which kind of made me dislike the overall puzzle.
Whew, harder than im used to for a Tuesday but fun!
I really, really wanted 37A to be a "PuPoo". (Tee hee)
@Nora Rifon my favorite puzzles are the gimmicky, rebus-filled ones. Themeless puzzles bring me no joy. I suppose that's why they have a mix...a little something for everyone. Maybe I should start griping on the puzzles without the extras.
Fun puzzle! I basically filled all the downs first and left the acrosses blank, knowing some sort of trick were separating the words. The revealer of DASHED LINE made everything click. Just lovely. I also appreciate the rebuses working both ways.
What a tasty puzzle! I did this just about 5 minutes faster than my average Tuesday. I'm going to reward myself with my favorite food group, EMPTY CALORIES 😜
Two things made me feel bad about myself today: 1) Apparently I can't do even the most basic of arithmetic (though I enjoyed the puzzle and the concept!) 2) In her column, Caitlin said "I considered the possibility of a “freshman 45.” Thank goodness that’s not a thing." I'm sad to say that was a thing for me, and 24 years later I'm still trying to get it off!! I otherwise enjoyed the puzzle!
@Grumpy "Suh-weet" was said a lot in the late 2000s/early 2010s and was spelled the same way online. I'd say it's slang, which we see often in crosswords.
This was the fastest I've ever completed a puzzle (under 4 minutes)! I started doing puzzles from the bottom up, so I had all the crosses already filled and didn't need to reach into the deep abscesses of my brain for basketball terminology. Very breezy and enjoyable!
My fastest Sunday yet! Got the theme early, definitely boosted my weekend 🥰
Whew - this was a hard one! I usually do a couple passes through Saturday puzzles before I turn on autocorrect, where the only word I had correct was "suss". I had to reveal about 1/3 of the puzzle and still took me over 2 hours to complete it. Tipping my hat to all of you who were able to solve it!
Fun theme! Caught on right away to the theme clues, which always helps me start my day feeling like a genuis! Though, ERSATZ is new to me and I had TOUSLE instead of TOUPEE, so I got stuck in the NE corner until I did a look up.
"yOu KnOw wHaT haPpEns wHen yOu aSsUmE..." "You're ASSUMING I know the answer to that." (That phrase triggers memories of obnoxious high school teachers for me! I've learned how to shut them up.)
@Ιασων what is the strike about?
I got the stacks theme quickly (yea!) But got tripped up by most of the other clues (boo)! Tough but very fun!
@Kip this is how i feel after eating an unhealthy breakfast....might as well throw in the towel on the other meals, too 🤭
I'm new to the comments; i see lots of people saying EMUS. Is this an acronym for something or are we all avid fans of flightless birds?
@Seattlite Ha! I would have never gotten that. I can now tell my husband that I am doing chores when filling a crossword....."gotta feed the dogs, and then the emus…"
Can someone please explain to me what is different in the print direction? I didn't quite follow the article's explanation..
@Grant At "fancier" restaurants (both in NYC and abroad), I am often asked if I want "still or sparklng" water. In these cases, 'Still' refers to bottled water that is not carbonated. 'Tap water' is the 3rd option that isn't offered, presumably to shame you into paying for the bottled version.
@A.B. nevermind, I Googled it. First I'm hearing about it.
Great puzzle! I was stuck forever with the NE corner until I realized I spelled Rey as Rei....then the rest came together
@HeathieJ @jennifer thank you! I should say I don't *really* feel badly about either, but as I read her comment I couldn't help laugh about how this puzzle really brought out some of my shortcomings
@5cat I am far from being a top solver and I 100% prefer the gimmicky puzzles over the themeless ones. So please dont speak for "the rest of us".
@Crevecoeur I had "fed" for a while too. If you're "up by one" in sports lingo, you're in the lead. So "was up" meant you "led"
@Steve L I didn't get how fed would fit either, but I was positive it was "earfap" (not sure why 😂)
@Barry Ancona why not? (I'm new here)
