I’m a first-time commenter but have been reading and (mostly) enjoying this section for quite a while. Had to chime in today because I LOVED this puzzle! Super-cute and not too difficult for a Thursday. Great job!!
When I was really little, my mom would read me a book called “Emmitt Otter’s Jugband Christmas,” which was later made into a movie directed by Jim Henson. The theme made me smile.
This wasn’t even a crossword. It was some kind of a puzzle with words. I tried to like it but it was too tough for me.
Finally a rebus I could get on my own (no help from the column or comments!) PLUTO/ANYMINUTE sent me on my way. What a feat of construction! Impressive, and my thanks! I thought it was really fun and enjoyed the animation at the end.
LOVED this puzzle! Exceptional cluing, IMO, and chuckled aloud several times. My favorite answer was to the “struck by lightning” clue. Well done, Ralph! Keep ‘em coming.
@D Curious why you feel it’s “inappropriate?”
Cute, fun puzzle! Made for a nice start to the week.
@Asher B. Butter BEANs and wax BEANs are popular in the South. I’m a city dweller, but grew up on butter beans and I still love them!
I thought the theme was going to have something to do with Yoda.
There is an excellent brewery near me called Vicious Fishes with an even more excellent IPA called “Here Be Dragons.” Alas, it didn’t help me in the solve. Cheers!🍻
Thank you, Sean, for the Jewel Loyd and WNBA shoutout. It’s great to see men supporting and enjoying the league! Appreciate ya.
This was amazing and I really enjoyed it!
@Sean McGowan: Loved seeing the WNBA shout out in your column! I immediately pictured Mabrey having one of her fits when I solved CRASHINGOUT. It’s been a record breaking season for viewership and the playoffs should be exciting to watch. Thank you!
I thought this was really fun! Brought back memories of playing SMB with my little brother, who was a master at it. I needed some crossings before PRINCESSPEACH and BOWSERSCASTLE clicked, as well as some others. Great job, Kim, and thanks for the trip down memory lane!
@Bill in Yokohama I have actually said this many times, excitedly! Nothing like hearing your favorite tune come on when you’re not expecting it. 😬
@Sean McGowan It makes much more sense this way. Great feat of construction!
@Doug I’m usually not a huge fan of the rebus, but this one was really fun. I hope you’ll go back in and give it whirl. 😊
@pat in oregon You are doomed (like me). I think this should have been one of the monthly “bonus” puzzles. I spent the first 30 minutes thinking it was Star WARS. 🤦♀️
@Dan Woog The c and the h are silent. It’s pronounced “yat” with a short “a”.
@Adnil Heat as in a swim meet or track meet. Each heat has a certain level of athlete.
@Barry Ancona 🤣 I always look for your replies; they are dry and sarcastic. My jam.
@Jay Same here! I snickered. 🤭
@ad absurdum That made me chuckle.
@V Country ham is very much a thing and it’s delicious!
@Mean Old Lady Usually there are found at gas stations, adjacent to the self-serve soda machines.
@Bill 😂😂😂 “cacao” is great
@Peggy Hicks Totally had that before crossings told me it was wrong!
@Brian I won’t take her to task but I will say I had AVES for a while, even though there was no abbreviation in the clue. My bad.
@Katie As they say, “Speak for yourself.” I was enjoying the puzzle but had to go to the column for some help. I found quite a bit of resistance but kept at it and finally finished. Your comment felt condescending to those of us who don’t breeze through every crossword, setting daily records, but you do you.
@MaryEllen I was sure it was “necessities” and when it didn’t fit, I thought, “Ah. A rebus day.” Nope. 😆
@Michelle Botwinick Often, for me! 🥴
@Chris “Seeded” had me messed up for a while.
@The X-Phile I’m fortunate enough to be visiting the museum in June! Really looking forward to it.
@Grant She also recently had a successful run on Broadway in a show called “John Proctor is the Villain.”
@Barry Ancona GAH! Thank you for this! “Razor” as a verb - makes total sense now!
@Zac I made those same 2 mistakes. Ugh.
@Times Rita Mine has a star in the top right corner now.
@Xword Junkie I mean, how is that even possible, really? Mike must be brutal at trivia night.
@Barry Ancona Maybe she meant “gimmick.”
@Nate That was exactly my first guess.
@Me I immediately entered “pop!” Ugh.
@ky Decades ago, a Green Beret was accused of killing his family and he blamed it on a group of hippies. There was a book and a movie about it; that’s probably the only reason I had the term in the back of my brain.
