Snorting Elk
Seattle
I’m disappointed. I came to see everyone losing their 💩 over a rebus in a Wednesday puzzle only to realize I’m early. I thought it was a fun puzzle and I enjoyed catching some rays, something we’re sorely lacking in our weather.
A bit faster than normal, but serene before sedate and a few other miscues slowed me down. I liked MORNING FROST because it made me think of his The Hardship of Accounting Never ask of money spent Where the spender thinks it went. Nobody was ever meant To remember or invent What he did with every cent.
My worst Sunday time ever, I was not even close to being on the same wavelength. Ginny and I are just synonymically incompatible I guess. WHISKONSON finally got me going, loved WHYOMING. A clever puzzle that deserved a better solver than me.
Caught it early thanks to 40A and agree with the others that it was a bit easier than usual, very cleverly constructed, and a bit hard to navigate. Shading the clues instead of the grid could have eased the pain and produced a colorful finale for us electronic solvers. Fun regardless.
I had to sleep on this one, I was stuck in the southwest last night, but filled it in in a flash this morning, I shouldn't be surprised but was. What a fun puzzle, lots of clues on the outer periphery of my knowledge. Loved the themers, even the gamy one.
@Amy I couldn’t agree more, I’m smiling ear to ear, but am too chicken to compete with the group’s collective brilliance. Mike has his work cut out for him today. Emu we would never…
From annoyance at seemingly random doubles to eating humble pie while feeling like I’d had my thumb up my… Such a clever construct. Kudos.
Stuck in the NE forever, not a yogurt eater, except as tzatziki(Chef John’s)looked for a hyphenated meter like Sno-Cap(prefer SnowCap), and was mystified by the pair. Overall, I thought it a perfect Wednesday
Ouch. After yesterday’s breeze this one took the wind out of me. I was so wrong in so many places. Great puzzle we were just not on the same wavelength. Dickens had the excuse of being paid to stretch it out. Rand had no such excuse for her soporific repetitive drivel.
This was fun, fun, fun, and nicely done. I was a bit slow to catch on to the triple stack, but eventually the smoke cleared and this sub made hay and finished short of his average. A holiday treat.
So many J’s. I got the theme with quotation marks, but didn’t twig to 33A until I read the column. Loved all the themers, but like B think that TV TAPE said no one ever. Great puzzle.
As it happens, dual gaps in my knowledge, 52d and 58a, conspired to torpedo my Tuesday, and that’s my cross to bear. Well that and 3d, which as portmanteaus go is, in my not so humble opinion, nuyucky.
The East coast of this puzzle gave me fits. Jamborees vs camporees, natty ice(a recent connection word) that was new to me then, and powder puffs before Reese’s. On the west side elm slid into place thanks to crosses, never saw an episode of MacGyver, so that took a while. Numerous other misstep caused me to erase correct entries because they wouldn’t work with incorrect ones. I loved the clueing, you all of you in particular. I think I’ll leave Sunday for the morning.
Guess what I saw at a matinee last Sunday? Michael Keaton was worth the price of admission. A perfect Wednesday.
I thought it was going to be a breeze. I filled in the bottom half much faster than that my normal Friday, but then struggled in the top, getting more confused as Charlie came into view, and am I the only person that had poop in 2D forever. Deb, Gene Wilder and I are in concordance; the original Wonka was the only one we needed. Anyway, anytime I beat my Friday average is a good day. Nicely done Mr. Leach.
I think I fell for every misdirection. Uppity, cost, taibo before taebo. It all looks so simple now that it’s filled out. My friend Bud texted from Manly - no emus to be found.
Nicely done. I solved using northwest, and scratched my head forever trying it tie it to the attractions. If the rebus required both letters I would still be at it, so my gold star feels like a bit of a cheat. So very very clever.
A friend of mine went on a kick the bucket tour, seeing old friends he thought unlikely to be with us much longer. I was happy to be excluded. Nez Perce was easy having spent time in Imnaha in eastern Oregon, a tiny town close to the start of their flight towards Canada, where, a century on, they still talked fondly about the tribe. Nearby Joseph is named after their chief. Lots of smiles in these clues.
I loved PEASOUPER for waaaay too long, and then INASOUPER (which I hated) before realizing I was INASTUPOR. I had less trouble today than yesterday, but they were both pretty crunchy. An excellent puzzle.
Done in by a one(a) two (d) punch. Great puzzle, very clean, very fun, just a bit of an evil way to start, something I’m sure was intended. Not that it mattered as thole was new to me, but it seems like it should be in between tholes.
Well constructed. The trick was clever and helped my solve but a bit of a stretch. My only comment, not meant as criticism, is that I did not find it funny. Most Sundays have at least one laugh out loud answer. Activity with a silent P - swimming. I’m sure I’m not going to be alone in having problems with 86D, 99 & 110A - oof.
Super enjoyable. The penny dropped early in my second pass, with the alliterative drink. Here’s mud in your eye Mr. Youngs this was great.
We arrived at the vaccine check-in desk at the same time She went first Later we sat together to waiting for our shots I saw the grid on her phone Today’s? Yes? Spelling bee, strands, wordle, and connections too? Yes? Me too. Please tell me you’re not finished already! Not hardly, I flip between this and the 🐝 if I’m stuck. Her name was Deb I enjoyed our time together. And I liked this puzzle too.
I honestly don’t understand the kerfuffle, it seemed pretty obvious to me that the Ts were not to be touched. That said I’m not certain that the juice was worth the squeeze. Loved Red Sea and nape.
ZOOT and ZEBRA were my first two fills. I’m only an occasional Saturday solver, so anytime I finish one without resorting to AutoCheck, and under average I know it’s going to be pilloried for being too easy. And some answers were clued to an early week level. I did this while half watching the 10 meter diving, now that’s hard! Loved Grand Opening, and She’s so full of herself. Overall quite fun and nicely done.
@Marek I’m with you on KIL, and GDS seemed forced as well. I loved the themers especially pack your bagels and go , but those two really nits slowed me down. One person’s trivia is another’s knowledge gap and that’s the way it was for me today.
@Joan I thought that was the cleverest bit of misdirection in the puzzle. I hadn’t twigged to the theme on my first pass so it seemed perfectly reasonable that he’d repurposed a theme from his youth.
I really liked this puzzle even though I wasn’t even close to being on the same wavelength. No trouble with the themers. But in the rest Club was the most perplexing of my goofs, after needed(needs be)and but. I feel like I messed up just as the constructor intended.
Super fun, breezy with a touch of crunch and grin inducing to boot. Brava.
@Skeptical1 My impression, after reading innumerable comments over the years is that the construction difficulty for a Monday is high. The expectation is that everyone will get a gold star so the job is to make it challenging but only mildly so. Early week puzzles provide the best chance for a personal best and for a lot of us that’s where the fun is.
What a great Sunday puzzle. I especially loved grumpy friend.
My subconscious solved a good part of this, folio and comte are two that just popped in. I was also on the same wavelength with Kate, so much so that I came here expecting to hear how easy it was. About half my average time, which I attribute solely to synonym synchronicity. What a clean fun grid. Brava.
IDK what my problem was but until I remembered IDK I wa so very messed up in the NW and the SE where CAME=AMOUNT was simply not penetrating. Loved the puzzle, but thought the solver could have been better.
What a great debut. I caught on early to the trick but the rest of it was a struggle. Side note: I solve on a iPad, and the games app has started opening the NYT app and that doesn’t have the comments link.
I blasted through these spaces in a mere minute short of my PB time. Having the T in comment also the be next in line for 1A gave me pause but other than that it was just a matter of finding where the endings went, it being clear that there were no rebuses involved. Thanks Kareem.
Bravo, bravo, bravo. What a sheer delight this was to solve. Please sir may I have another. We are very emused.
I had more than a few chuckles solving this, along with a few grumbles about all the proper names. I was a bit flummoxed early on, thinking that all four of the shaded squares were all connected and I found flipping back and forth between numbers and words distracting. So I left the grays to the end and filled them in in a heartbeat. Overall a very nicely constructed puzzle that required a bit more help from crosses than normal.
@Helen Wright Love the series and adore the books. Jackson Lamb is, somewhat unbelievably, even more hilariously odious in print. Mick Herron is one of those authors I wish would “write faster”.
The theme didn’t help in the solve. Now if they’d been in order… Regardless, impressive construction with some crunchy bits, a bit better than my average but then my averages are meaningless as I’m rarely given the puzzle my full attention. Thank heavens the 🐝 isn’t timed.
I loved this puzzle. The themers all made me chuckle. Et tu emu
@Eric Hougland Many moons ago I saw an interview with two of the writers; the interviewer asked them when they put in the adult jokes. One answered. “You have it backwards, we write it for us and then we add in the kid stuff.” I’ve often wondered how much Robin Williams ad libbed. I love you, kid, but I’m not ready to pick out drapes yet.
Just adding my name to the long list of personal bests, something I thought unlikely to happen using my iPad. Emus prefer cuddly Huskies over scary Wolverines.
Echoing others, a Sunday Best for me, What a fun solve, the themers almost solved themselves.
@Tyler D. Thank you for writing my post for me. I had more or less the identical experience. Which is to say we had the same holes in our knowledge. Lovely puzzle. 🦜🦜🦜
@Mean Old Lady Amen Do emus over share.
@Andrzej The tab in my brain says that a pill is someone who’s behavior or presence is hard to swallow(tolerate) You dear solver, are no pill.
@Amy same here, I stuck with SKU waaay to long.
@HeathieJ Echoing Eric. I do it every day and not infrequently come up with perfectly good words, davit pops to mind, that aren’t on the list. Submit them as omissions and maybe one day they will work. In a triumph of hope over experience I kept trying tamari, and one day it worked. It’s late in the day so I don’t think the emus will object to a cross forum post.
What a fun Monday! Once I got the trick I filled in all the remaining O’s, and then flew through it. I have no idea how many clues I didn’t read. Bravo.
Not quite a personal best but oh so close, totally eclipsed by the headline, but fast fun nevertheless.
