Formatting issues on the app have been quite common lately, and really take away from the user experience. The constructors put in so much effort to create fun and challenging puzzles, only for them to be let down by software issues. Is no one at NYT testing these before release? Very disappointing.
It appears the Tuesday and Wednesday puzzles were swapped this week…
@Cat Lady Margaret you forgot the strange metallic object that no one can remember the use of, but everyone is afraid to throw out because they might need it. Usually located in between to a charger for a phone from the mid-00s and 27 pens in various stages of death.
Just dropping in with a reminder that what many Americans know as “mount Rushmore” is properly called Tȟuŋkášila Šákpe (Six Grandfathers), and is/was a holy site for the Lakota tribe. Rushmore was a lawyer who partially paid for the work. The blog Native Hope has an in depth history of this topic.
A reminder that the Negev desert is also called al-Naqab in Arabic, and the indigenous inhabitants were forcefully removed from their lands. To this day, the state of Israel does not recognize the remaining Bedouin inhabitants and has been relocating them into government towns. Disappointed the Times did not list both names for the desert in the clue. It matters, now more than ever.
What a tremendously fun and creativity constructed puzzle! I have my Siri set to an Irish voice and something about it makes it more fun to use. And I always remember to thank her after each request so I am hopefully spared a violent death in the seemingly inevitable AI takeover.
Not a fan of this one, but I also don’t watch movies. Bleh, totally slog
I automatically tried EMUS for 43D. Do emus do the hula? As a Philadelphian, my preferred cheesesteak order is American wit on a seeded roll. If you are looking for a good cheesesteak, Jim’s South Street has recently reopened. Stay away from Pats/Genos- greasy logs masquerading as steaks. And a roast pork sandwich with rabe and sharp provolone will beat a cheesesteak any day. Happy munching.
Sticky treats made me groan audibly. Fun puzzle!
An ingredient is something that is added to make a dish. Yeast is not an ingredient of sourdough starter, as it is not manually added. Pedantic yes, and I’m not sure why I care, having murdered several sourdough starters, including Kevin, the Son of Kevin, and Kevin’s revenge.
This was a slog for me. Normally, I don’t mind obscure puzzles because it gives me a chance to learn something new, but this just didn’t hit.
I would say macaroni is a pasta, not a noodle. I’d ask the Italians in my neighborhood but I want them to like me. I wonder which has been listed more frequently- emus or eels?
@Skip Intro Philadelphian here. Wit/without had always been onions. And always fried onions- some psychopath once gave me raw onions and I nearly burnt the place down in rage.
It was silly, punny, and ruined my time. I freaking LOVED IT. WHISK ON SON Made me laugh harder than it should. A fun puzzle for a gloomy East Coast Sunday.
@Eva H. Go clutch your pearls elsewhere boomer. The puzzle adapts to the times, unlike you.
@Strudel Dad construction of the M18 in Ireland was delayed more than 10 years to avoid a “fairy tree” in County Clare. The tree is so important to Gaelic lore that the roadway had to be entirely rerouted so that it did not come within 5 meters of the tree to avoid angering the fae and setting off a fairy war between fairies of rival counties.
This was a slog for me. Just couldn’t get it. I normally get the gimmick early on too. I blame Hurricane Debby and the grey rainy skies over Philadelphia.
My high school mascot was the Charger and one of our seniors handmade a credit card costume that he wore instead of the horse one the school provided as the “official” mascot costume. don’t remember much from high school but I can vividly recall his outfit.
Maybe I don’t watch enough (any) rom coms but what on earth is “meet cute”???
This was so much fun to solve!
What a fun puzzle! I figured out 7D and knew there was probably a rebus involved. Very clever.
This was such a joy to work on. I picked up on the concept pretty quickly. I wonder if this puzzle sets the record for “most rebuses in a single NYT crossword”? Slices of fun today!
Interior design is not decor. Interior decoration is decor. Interior Designer is a licensed professional who is responsible for building codes, spatial analysis, sustainability measures, occupant health and safety, and at the very end, finishes, and fixtures. We have standards and laws to uphold, we are responsible for ADA compliance. An interior decorator picks our pillows and curtains. An interior designer makes sure a space is safe, compliant, and efficient. Signed, a frustrated interior designer
Cute puzzle! Fast fun solve
A fun Monday! Dare I say, more fun than the activity it depicts? This emu has bad hand-eye coordination….
Absolutely loved this puzzle! I picked it up right away but it was still tricky to make my brain think in zig-zags rather than straight down. Very fun to complete.
Fun puzzle and fabulous debut! I got the concept immediately. I wish the road issues in Philadelphia were merely just bumps. The last time I got my car inspected, it was 16 degrees out of alignment from hitting so many potholes. Is it still a pothole if it’s large enough to fit a whole emu?
@RozzieGrandma can I come party with you?
Whew this made my brain WORK today. Lots of lookups but I prevailed. Fun challenge!
@Roman Argos is a Greek name, the “leader” is the first letter of Argos which in Greek is Alpha.
@Lauren Ford my Tuesday time was … abysmal
I feel very 53A about this puzzle.
@Francis the Infinite Emu Theorem.
@Sarah *creatively. Fat finger syndrome. My fellow emus know the pain.
Loved it! For a while I thought it was car themed because I wanted it to be “JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL”. I don’t drive much, obviously.
@Dave C. They use refined uranium ore. The clue is correct.
Fantastic puzzle- I love rebuses and this one takes the gold. Challenging and I learned some new words.
@Bill in Yokohama thank you for the recommendation. I love books like this!
@Hunter I thought it was just me! I hate the new lines.
@Nom De Plume Google is free.
@Barry Ancona I’m confused by the confusion on this one. I use bail in this context all the time.
