If the puzzle can be solved in two ways it should be completable as both ways. I figured if I had the down answers filled consistently and correctly then it would do a cute little animation of the braiding when I was finished.
@Canard People who obsess over completion time are a mystery to me.
Had to check the answer key. I was sure it was Sao PAOLO and the bricks were DOPLO. Oops!
VEX could have had a better clue. I had HEX in 15 across and assumed EHAN Goldberg was just an Israeli name I'd never heard of. Like Etan Cohen
As a 30 year old boomer I want to point out that Ray Davies is clearly singing "LO LO LO LO LOLA" not "LA LA LA LA LOLA"
@Another Eli Q: How do you know someone went to Yale? A: They'll tell you
NERTS? Was this puzzle written by Madea?
@Alexia Not common enough apparently
Sad to see Vertex going. At least release the art to Burgess so he can continue to profit from his work! I never liked that they were so ephemeral.
Loved the Greek mythology clues and the God of War shoutout - as someone who got interested in the subject after playing that game as a kid. Side note - Do NOT let your child play (the original 2005) God of War
@Aaron Teasdale I had a vague idea of what copacetic meant, but for the answer to be JAKE I was extremely confused. I only know that word to be a brake on a semi truck and the name of my pet cat.
@CCNY This reads like there's a secret code hidden in the first letter of each line
Two nail polishes seems excessive when you could have clued for actress ESSIE Davis or "Short for Esther?"
@Kerry O'Donovan So many other clues could have been used for SERENADED. I agree that a person singing directly for someone else comes to mind
@Anthony Same, possibly because "NUNHOOD" isn't a word that I've ever heard and "NUNNERY" fit much better for the clue
@Ιασων A German did something despite finding no joy in it? Stop the presses
I think "Norse god of war" oversimplifies what ODIN's role is in Norse mythology.
@Grant I like the chicken salad club sandwich, it's like a BLT on steroids
I wonder if there was some era where parents were complaining about the lack of Roman numerals in education, the way people whine about their kids not knowing cursive. I certainly struggle with anything over XIII
Pretty annoyed at how long I had to stare at the answer key before I saw I had ENDOR was in 3D instead of ANDOR (both Star Wars things I'm vaguely aware of.) And BLEH becomes BLAH. Because the clue is just "Meh". Great stuff.
@ad absurdum "Was it something I ate?"
@Joe I must have entered and erased YURTS a half dozen times before I looked up her name. T'NIA can t'ake a h'ike where I'm concerned
Better cluing of 31D would have kept me from peeking at the answers, since a TAXDODGE isn't a physical place. I had TAXLODGES which gave me a cross of WOOLED - I guess now I know what sylvan means and that it isn't a special type of fabric.
@Lewis that's that French website that was surreptitiously charged to my credit card
@Linda I don't know rap either but love the idea of Shania Twain recording "Buy U A Drank." She would kill it too
@Bill Ents on a log is just wood on wood. Plywood, if you will.
I have issue with the "paparazzi" clueing for POTTER SPOTTER. POTTER SHOTTER makes more sense for that clue and has an added twist of "potshot"
@Barry Ancona Thanks, I did need it. No idea what an N-TUPLE is (but N-TABLE seemed to make sense) and Papal BULL was not in my vocabulary.
@Gina D Sounds extremely unpleasant haha
If GAMIN is a Spanish word, shouldn't the clue allude to that?
@Billy I was sure that AXLE would be a clue for the theme.
@Charles Drunk, alkie, lush, boozer. Anyway what were you asking?
"Guiding principles" plural is ETHIC, not ETHOS? Am I missing something?
@George LEHANE and ALIA for me. I had Dennis LEHINE until I peeked at the blog for help.
@Mean Old Lady Cleavon Little, close enough. Cle-don Cheetle
@Ritwik Not today, Machu Picchu, I've got a 151 day streak to maintain
