Can't put my finger on why, but I found it not particularly enjoyable. Clever, but not fun.
1A has nothing to do with canal locks. The C-shaped swiveling fixtures on the gunwales of a rowboat, which hold the oars in position, are called "oar locks".
I'll go against the grain here. I loved this puzzle! It did take me almost 2 hours with no lookups, which is double my average time. But it was very satisfying to get the six trick clues. I enjoyed the whole puzzle and did not find it a slog at all.
I usually allow an hour for Saturdays; this one took 46 minutes. I'm sure that's much slower than many of you out there. I found it quite challenging but was lucky with my guesses on a few of the long ones.
@Artie The three separate words have noting to do with the clues but are actual words. I found that very confusing until I figured out the theme.
Not too difficult for a Saturday puzzle.
@Emily I guessed FETLOCKS immediately upon looking at the clue without looking at the grid for any confirmatory evidence. It's a very common term among horse people.
Fun puzzle but very easy for a Saturday.
@Lynn I never know any of the pop culture stuff. But if you painstakingly figure out even parts of the crossing entries, you can make guesses. For example, I had the two Ns for "Full House dad", so I figured it was most likely Sonny or Danny. I went with Danny and a whole bunch of other clues fell into place.
@Logan MOTTST was easy for a New Yorker. But CHIASMUS had me pulling my hair out. I got it purely through the intersecting words.
I completed the puzzle quite quickly (for me), but I still don't get 49D and 54A. Can someone enlighten me?
@Jake G If I can finish a Saturday puzzle in under an hour without any cheating (e.g., looking up definitions or pop culture references), I'm very pleased. This one took 33 minutes. I think I got lucky one because I guessed a few long ones correctly right off the bat.
@RozzieGrandma Yes, Friday was quite rough (49 minutes to today's 33). But I cheated a tiny bit (had to look up the Ariana Grande reference).
@VN NM, I finally figured them out. Diabolical!
