I was expecting something to happen when I completed it. Colors, flashing letters, some kind of whiz bangs.
What a tedious, tiresome puzzle. I think that if I didn't have a nice streak going I would just pass on these oh-so-cutesy entries.
Pretty good puzzle, even nifty. However, I think that 1D is a bad clue.
Another one I completed, then checked Wordplay to see what it all was about.
Oh boy. How cute. Maybe tomorrow a crossword puzzle?
I had to put it down and come back after a couple of hours, then the northwest corner suddenly made sense. After all the years I've been doing the NYT crossword, I'm still amazed how that works --- from not having an inkling to, "Ah, now I see it!"
If I ever cancel my subscription to the NYT crossword it'll be because of a trainwreck puzzle like this. I've got a lot of it finished but I think that I'm just going to quit. I despise losing a nice streak because of this tedious and nonsensical --- better not continue (emu).
What a slog. I'm still not sure what it was about --- and I'm not even gonna look.
I generally dislike gimmick puzzles, especially on Sunday. This one was a lot of work (and not much fun).
I did it, but I didn't like it.
Didn't seem like a Tuesday puzzle. Way too many questionable clues.
I'm crushed -- a rebus I actually liked. I probably should cancel my subscription and call it a day.
I would write how much I dislike this puzzle, but it wouldn't be printed. I'm seriously considering a better way to spend the couple of bucks I send in.
After yesterday, it was really nice to have a puzzle with clever but sensible clues.
l had to work around not knowing anything about Mario or his universe, and that was tough -- two nonsensical answers (one long). Now that I know a couple of charcters from Mario, I'm gonna forget them ASAP.
55A and 46D just for starters. I really disliked this puzzle.
Clever and enjoyed it. But "goodoh"?
It turns out 109A is correct as "career". I won't forget it (so it'll probably never be used again).
I know that I'm older than most solvers (78) and this puzzle took me back a few decades. I really enjoyed it! Really great!
I've always thought there should be a snazzier word for onomatopoeia. Maybe crashblamwhooshkabopoeia.
What a lousy puzzle.
I disliked this puzzle intensely. It just seems like someone had to try so hard to come up with yet another cutesy gimmick. Also, a little research might have helped.
I have to wonder how many solvers actually figured out the theme. I had to read Wordplay to get it, and I said, "hmmm".
The hardest thing was giving up 'bae' on 38A. Its also hard for me (being an old guy) to think of Shel Silverstein as a kid's author.
I found this to be a pretty difficult puzzle, but I enjoyed it. Mostly because it was an actual crossword.
I didn't think it was possible -- I disliked this one more than a rebus.
"Nattering nabobs of negativity" (Spiro Agnew) You just don't see (or hear) the word nabob anymore.
One of those that at first seemed imcomprehensible, then just came together. In other words, the best kind.
@Marshall Walthew I agree on ACNED. As far as the emus, it seems the constuctors can say things IN the puzzles that we can't say ABOUT the puzzles.
I enjoyed this puzzle but I never did figure out the secred coded message. I assume it has something to do with drinking Ovaltine, but it was too faint on my screen to make out.
I solved it in a little less than an hour, so I guess that l shouldn't complain, but a Sunday rebus is just so tedious to me. They used to be a relaxing fun solve. A rebus is very seldom fun.
If golf is a good walk spoiled, a rebus is a good puzzle ruined. Especially for Sunday.
@Bethany There are people who solve the puzzles 20 minutes before they're published and have streaks that go back to when Hoover was president. And they'll tell you all about it (every chance they get).
in re to 12A. In an old "Honeymooners" episode Norton mispronounces "polo ponies" as one word (emphasis on the second O). It then becomes a running gag through the show.
There were a lot of question marks in the clues. That is very appropriate. There's been something missing lately (and I know his name).
In many ways, this is the worst puzzle I've seen in a long time. I think some of the clues may belong to a different puzzle.
What a tedious puzzle.
This was a fun puzzle. Thanks!
I just thought Ratty was a rat.
Is a gimmick so important that simply entering "line" couldn't be accepted. It is a crossWORD puzzle afterall. I finally got it, but I think its ridiculous.
I was truly thinking about cancelling my subscription (feeling that I was simply too old). The last three days have been great, challenging puzzles. Thankful!
What a god-awful Wednesday puzzle. If you're going to be clever, be clever!
Why are these cutesy puzzles so tedious? Can't we just have a good Sunday puzzle anymore? They're already large, so that's it's own gimmick. I now do them on Saturday night so as not to ruin my Sunday.
Not the sort of Sunday puzzle I like. Tedious, not fun. I am not (thank god) a trekkie.
Rebus (AKA another Sunday puzzle ruined).
A sort of clumsy feeling puzzle. I was gald when I solved it as it wasn't any fun. Tucket indeed.
"Jai alai" -- be still my old heart. Now one with "raree show". Thank you!
Good Sunday puzzle (for a Saturday night).
Got it, but not thrilled with a number of clues. And I thought it was "ackee".
