Worst comments ever. I’m apparently in the minority among those who visit the comments, but I absolutely loved today’s challenging puzzle.
OMGYES I loved this. One of my favorite Sunday puzzles EVER. Boatloads of fun: fabulous clues (48A!, 78D), classic puzzle words (24A!, 59D!), delightful crossings (6D/18A!), blasts from the past (46A), not to mention (but I will) the brilliant construction. Thanks, Alex! This made my day.
In Roman numerals, 40 is XL, not XXXL, hope that can be corrected in the column.

@dutchiris Well said!
This was tough and really satisfying. I roared when I finally got 34A and 35A, and I loved having 37D pulled from the deep so I might keep spelling it right for another few months. So many great clues!
@Dan Every subgroup is a coset, so I think the clue is fair. “Parrots” would be a fair clue for BIRDS, even though birds are generally not parrots.
It took me over an hour, but I’m glad I PERSISTED. Happy Saturday!
@JGrey Haters gonna hate, ushers gonna ush! Never heard the word myself, but it made sense in the end.
@Jack McCullough We played PADIDDLE (and ALPHABET) all the time on family vacations in the 1960s. I’ve mentioned it to friends now and then over the years, but no one had ever heard of it. I’d even wondered recently if it was a false memory, so what a relief — and a bit help with today’s puzzle — to see it!
@sotto voce Wait, what, “zooming”? I don’t know if I never tried before or if it’s only recently been possible, but thanks to your comment, I will never need to squint again to see those oh-so-tiny Sunday numbers. Just pinch-zoom (or unpinch-zoom?) works, at least on the iOS app. 👏
