I can't believe NYT is once again using OCTOPI instead of the correct form, "octopuses." This goes for the hippopotamus as well.

@Elijah Bush there is nothing archaic about STET. It is routinely used in editing. And SCADS is not uncommon; I use it in conversation.

I'm just halfway through and have to stop long enough to say how frustrating this is. The colors make it almost impossible to figure out which word I'm on! It's very difficult to read.

This is a good idea that wasn't executed. The pig latin answers don't make sense. They simply sound like pig latin, but translated, don't answer the question. Try again, Amsay.

Sigh. I have about 500 music CDs. I buy a few every month. Somehow this makes me a dinosaur. But if you visit me at my mountain cabin, your streaming music won't work. No wifi. And why should I throw them away and buy the music all over again? What is this absurd notion that each new technology requires us to ditch the previous one, even if it works better?

A lot of people celebrate Pioneer Day. These (unfortunately revisionist) holidays are all over the West. Took me forever to choose a state rather than a group of people. And a state outside Oregon Territory!

@Man and 2 dogs I don't care. I will always complain about this. I'm fond of octopuses and want them to have their proper name. Respect!

Freezing rain, or in a more poetic mode, silver thaw. I see this almost every winter and have never heard the term ICE RAIN.

@Bill Oh, check Busby Berkeley numbers on youtube. Incredible overhead choreography. No such thing as cheating. It's your puzzle and you can finish it any way you want. The puzzle gods (like Will) all agree.

@Lioncitysolver Sleet is different; that's a slushy, semi-frozen rain. Freezing rain is true rain that freezes on impact. It encases everything in a transparent glaze. It's gorgeous and deadly.

It's annoying, that's all. Sometimes you need * for the cross, and sometimes you need STAR. It's not consistent.

I had state-dependent (minus the hyphen) instead of MOOD CONGRUENCE. It fits! A state-dependent memory returns when you are in the same context, which includes emotion - and, interestingly, degree of intoxication...

Took me the longest time to finish, because in croquet they are not called HOOPS, but wickets - as indicated in the photo at the top. This felt lazy, not sneaky.

@Lpr I know both work, but you can't read the words correctly with both. Some of the words use an asterisk and some use the word 'star.' That's what I mean.

@Xword Junkie I know that! I am just saying that you can't read it that way. Co* is not Costar. I'm a writer and reader and it's just a bit annoying that some of the words are wrong with an asterisk and some of the names are wrong with the word.
