For a while I wondered what gene rations were.
Great puzzle with tough but fair clues, the ones that make you “ahh” when you figure them out.
Even Ms. Edebiri would be embarrassed to know her name has come up three days in a row.
Can’t wait for a puzzle where the theme is yoko ono sitting by lake erie eating oreos while listening to etta sing an aria accompanied by eno…
@Robin I guess because it hasn’t moved? :D
@Francis I just meant Mr. Biden used that term quite often.
I have a rotary dial phone that connects to my iphone via bluetooth. I use it occasionally just for the nostalgia, plus you have the satisfaction of slamming the phone down on unsolicited scammers.
No complaint about the puzzle but I happen to like thin crust pizza.
I thought the theme was clever.
If the puzzle is hard I wreck my brain and my day is ruined. If the puzzle is easy I twirl my thumbs and my day is ruined. Just kidding. I don’t twirl my thumbs.
Of all the state flags I personally think Alaska is the most classy, designed by a 13 (or 14?) year-old Native American boy living in an orphanage to add!
Was expecting to see WARANDPEACE somewhere in the puzzle.
57A clue brought to mind the great Billie Holiday lilting… 🎵 The difficult I’ll do right now, the impossible will take a little while 🎵…
I solved it and understood the currency part but didn’t know about ALL until I read the column which makes the clues more sensible.
Being a vibrant, strong-willed, spirited person and, well, frank (no pun intended) as Anne Frank was, I doubt if she would be offended by the innocent reference to her diary in the clue. It was after all really her account of the horrible things that happened. I have a feeling she would not approve of us prim, prudent adults tip-toeing around delicate subjects trying not to offend anyone. She might even laugh with Joan Rivers who had a “ 6M” tattoos on her arm yet had no qualms about making Holocaust jokes. Per Ms. Rivers, if people laugh at something they will remember it.
Seems straightforward for a Wed but it makes me feel smart so no complaints.
It’s solvable but a tough one for Tuesday. 53A, 57A, 69A, 40D and some others are all tough clues for Tuesday. Cute theme though :)
I still have and play an 8D sometimes.
Fourteen years old. First submission to the NYT. A Friday puzzle. English is probably not even his first language. Impressive all around!
Coral snakes are drop-dead gorgeous. I am often amazed at how perfectly beautiful many animals are while humans’ physical appearance leaves much to be desired, especially in our natural, unadorned state. Of all the animals in my house (dogs, birds, fishes…) I am the ugliest of them all and that’s no false modesty.
Anybody else dislikes the constant ASPCA commercials of abused pets being left in the cold or heat that they hope would pull at your heart (and purse) strings? I vehemently hate them. I know there are abused animals out there and they need help, but I don’t need to see graphical images of them (likely accompanied by Sarah McLachlan lacrimoso whines in the background) over and over again. They ruin my day. Show me pictures of the abusing owners in handcuffs or better yet, tied to the same spots without food and water and I will contribute tenfolds.
36D is charming as a person, but she was quite out of her league as a trivia game host, which is no shame. Like being good at trivia puzzle solving shouldn’t be one’s pride, I think. There are more lofty goals out there.
STABONTHEBACK/ROPEON forced me to reveal. English is my second language so those two sounded perfectly fine to me. Sigh.
Not knowing baseball I was looking to fill in with a fourth base.
I have learned quite a lot of Star Trek, Star Wars, baseball, and rapper names while beginning to forget more useful info like Guana? Gyana?… No, Ghana.
XDIN is just unacceptable.
On the easier side but very clever! I appreciate the fact that even with the C the words still have some other meaning 👏👏
I am amazed at the new, clever ideas that creators keep coming up with for fun puzzles.
All the puzzles this week seem easy, or I turned suddenly smart overnight.
Boobies have the nicest shoes that nature has ever made.
On the easier side (it’s Tuesday) but the construction is impressive! 👏👏
Meave and Osier forced me to google. I most likely won’t remember them next time.
HAVEATIT reminds me of a picture of a sign in a bank somewhere on the internet that says “Pen is broken” with insufficient spacing between certain words.
We software programmers don’t think IT Pros as the ones fixing bugs. IT pros brings to mind the people who handle the installation of software apps and maintain the network system in a company, which is a challenging job on its own. Software engineers write software and fix bugs.
Soaring Dragon is not a nickname of 16-A. It was an official name (Thăng Long) of that world capital in the past, just like Edo was a former name of Tokyo.
Being a semi classical musician (or a wannabe) 22A helped me crack the code. I like the puzzle!
First time I ever had the use for that knowledge of knowing the name of that little plastic thing at the tip of your shoelaces!
Alternative clue for 9A: MAGA, for one.
I haven’t read Harry Potter but of course I know of the books with their enormous success and their revered author. I have also seen some of her tweets where she traded barbs and insults with other posters on topics that she cared about. I respect her views and actually don’t disagree with some of them, but that kind of publicity makes her less of a great person in my regard. It takes away the mysterious aura that some other great writers, like J. D. Salinger or Harper Lee, have. Sometimes less publicity is more.
50A - living in San Diego finally pays off.
Mochi should be handed out on all occasions!
Heckelphone doesn’t sound like an instrument that should be in a respectable orchestra :D. More like a thing you bring to a political rally of a politician you detest :).
16A - like buying a powerball ticket today, which I did.
What’s wrong with opera?
Hello again Enya, Etta, Ono…
Solving this puzzle is fun galore chore!
Very clever! You can take DR out of DR[DR]E too 😂
