I thought the theme was great, even though I didn't pick up on the movie names being hooks for the fish. I noticed the two thematic categories separately. I also enjoyed the puns and misdirects. Unfortunately for me, trivia clues crossing trivia clues is my weakness, so I had to do some half-cheating Googling (e.g., "golfer Ben H"). Overall, I enjoyed it, and I can't relate to all the huffing and puffing in the comments.
@Lewis, Thank you for sharing that bit of trivia, that all the theme answers are first-timers! Very cool.
I really liked the theme! Very cleaver! Unfortunately for me, there were several vital clues that eluded me. I think OVERARM was a big problem for me, as I couldn't get CLAY ART or similar out my head. As in, the style in which you throw the medium is your clay art. But with a little Googling (not for answers but for knowledge, as is my cheating style) and finally a couple gimmes from the article, the beast was slain.
@Sheila It's a prep step in which you dice your vegetables. I think it specifically refers to aromatics like onion, garlic, carrot, and celery.
@Nikita Richardson, I really enjoyed your reference there. One of the best comedy shows ever produced! The original three seasons, anyway.
@Niall 142 seconds, as in 2 min, 22 sec? That's hardly enough time to type the answers in.
@cameron Not that I plan on competing, but I'm curious. Do most solvers accept their gold star and streak continuation after reading the Word Play column, or is it half-cheating? Do we need to add silver and bronze stars for using a hint? All's in good fun!
@Mark The clue is about the use of essential oils as a sort of folk medicine, not FDA-approved compounds that are an essential part of treatment.
