What perfect timing for this puzzle, finishing just before I head off to an event to celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)! A very fun puzzle, well constructed with fun ASL clues.
IS IT EW? NO, IT IS OK OK OK BY ME. (EM US OK TO ME? NO!)
I had to look this up myself, apparently dabblers are a category of duck (that feed predominantly on the surface of the water, as opposed to diving ducks). And a Teal duck is a common species of duck that dabbles.
I always get skewered by those pesky KABOBs! EMUs should not be skewered.
@Lee this reminds me of an excellent NYT piece from about a decade ago: "How Y’all, Youse and You Guys Talk". It uses a quiz about specific terms (such as soda vs cola vs pop vs coke), to attempt and map out where you were raised. In my case it returned both where I grew up, and where one of my parents did. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/upshot/dialect-quiz-map.html
Thanks for the heads up! There are sites that allow you to download older versions of a given app. It's always good to be cautious, but I can say that APKMirror has served me well for a long time and is highly regarded. (To the mods, this does not facilitate piracy / payment evasion, it just helps legacy devices maintain access to apps.)
Fun puzzle, although as ever I object to 33A being clued as a form of identification. It says right on the card "Not For Identification". Or rather used to say, since we managed to create a de facto national ID, without any of the security measures that would normally accompany such a system. So we're stuck with a horribly insecure system, but the moment anyone proposes an actual national ID they are fed to the wolves. My systemic gripes aside, I really enjoyed the puzzle today!
I cross-solved (I think that's the term?) SAIDAH, but had no idea what it meant and assumed I'd messed up. Finished the puzzle, reread the hint and burst out laughing. (SAID AH).
@RozzieGrandma not a Brit, but I assume you mean Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh? If so, their Beatrice and Benedick in "Much Ado About Nothing" was stellar.
I don't have a concrete answer, but if you go to the "puzzle pointers" link at the bottom of the daily page, at the very bottom of that is a "page maintained by" that includes a clickable email address. If you haven't done so already, I'm sure the page maintainer would be happy to provide info. Wishing you an overabundance of puzzles in this new year!
@Joe V mine showed up just fine. If you email them (nytgames at nytimes dot com), they will most probably be able to fix it for you.
For anyone else who was having significant overheating issues recently with the Android NYT Games app, uninstalling then reinstalling seems to have fixed the issue, at least for me. (Before the reinstall, a 10 minute crossword was causing more battery drain and thermal issues for my new phone than 30 minutes of high graphics gaming).
@Steve L a small correction, the website is xwstats.com Otherwise very useful information, thank you for reminding me that that site exists.
@Walter Burton when that's happened to me in the past - especially in the app - I will log in to my account elsewhere (mobile browser, computer), remove and then replace a letter in order to update it, and it will give me the completion screen.
I also very much appreciate it the II, NN, GG set. at first I wasn't sure if I had made a mistake, but it quickly became apparent it was intentional.
