When I started crosswords, I hated the rebus. Now, with my first ever no lookup solve on a Thursday with this excellent puzzle, I *am* the rebus. Just don't look at my average solve time.
Perfect Sunday puzzle for me - really nice fill. Now to annoy my family by injecting POST HOC ERGO PROPTER HOC into conversation for the rest of the day…
First time in a while I’ve not really enjoyed a puzzle - the solve was fine, but just lacked a je ne sais quoi for me. It’s not all about me though, and seeing the comment section go off with excitement is always a cool. Kudos to the constructor, clearly hit a vibe for many.
Just a really enjoyable puzzle - well clued and a witty theme.
@Ιασων I used to make the same mistake too! Now I come after I’ve solved and have tried to predict what people will be complaining about…
Has been a great week of puzzling for me - no pbs, but really nice flows. I know there are still 2 days to go - hopefully I can keep the momentum! Today’s was no exception, thanks Sarah and Rafael!
@bill I was once like you. I did, over a year or so, train myself to watch for the tricks indicating there could be a rebus. Now, it’s a real delight when I pick them and get the gold badge. Wednesdays, Thursday and Sundays have gone from my least favourite days to most favourite. IMO the rebus clues (and some of the others) make the NYT so fun to solve. Embrace the rebus!
Regardless of how long it took me to solve the puzzle, i had a great time. It’s a bonus when its a new PB! Thanks to the constructor, looking forward to many more!
@john ezra this comment was almost as good as the puzzle. I didn’t realise they snuck IRENE ADLER in until you mentioned it!
Wow! This one kept me going. Blew out my average like a great Sunday should. I had no idea cake or egg were of NORSE origin. Cracking puzzle Mr. Kugelman!
Excellent puzzle, I love SPOONERISMS - I’ve got my kids doing them. I somehow didn't clock the theme till the last couple of entries and got a good laugh.
Liked this one - nice and smooth for a Thursday. I found the theme to be a little opaque. Great cluing though and those DORITOS flavours sound amazing!
Pretty good puzzle, I like a grid I don’t immediately blaze through. On my first pass i had SONY instead of VAIO - I believe at one point, they were the same company!
Definitely not as quick as some of the wizards posting below, but this was my first Saturday without checking any references! And what a puzzle it was - such an enjoyable solve. Learned some new words in TORERO and sit SHIVA. Loved it.
@Karen I really hope it’s a rebus…
Sometimes the American-isms get me, but I’d like to know who knew EGGCREAM? What a great solve though, very smooth - kudos to Patrick Maher.
@Mark Cousins Mark, that streak is incredible. The fastest times are nowhere near as impressive as that. As I sit here on 20 days…
I loved the crossing of LACUNA and COIL. Surely intentional, but sent me back into my youth!
