I'm willing to be the first one to say that this was a show off for the constructors. But ultimately so arcane as not to be fun. But the late Eugene Maleska, asked whether it was fair to look up answers in a dictionary, replied that he thought it was since, after all, the constructors do.
Is it just me, or is there a new lag between finishing the puzzle and the site responding to it being completed? Used to be that as soon as I entered the last letter, it said that it was done and correct or that I missed something. But now, it seems that it's off doing something else and has to stop texting its friend so it can remember that it has a job to do.
"41D. This is the first time this athlete has been in a Times puzzle, but I’m sure it won’t be the last: The [French soccer superstar Kylian] is Kylian MBAPPÉ." Some years back, Eugene Maleska (then puzzle editor) was asked whether it was legit to look things up in solving puzzles. His answer was that, yes, it was fine since the people creating them almost certainly did.
Am I the only one having trouble figuring out the meta of the midi today? What's with the numbers? Almost--but not--of them are primes. But beyond that, I'm as lost as an Easter egg.
Reminds me of one m y mother taught me: how do you pronounce ghoti ? It's fish. GH as in enough; o as in women; and ti as in inattention. Piece of cake. Attributed to no less than Andrew Jackson: "It's a damn poor m ind that can only think of one way to spell a word."
Anybody wanna help me understand 29A? I got from the crossing clues, but I have no idea what it means.
Pretty much a ???? until the light came on. Then it was a marvel.
Tough, but interesting. Using multiple letters in only one of the answers, though, is dirty pool.
"I assumed the black squares held the extra letters...." You're not the only one.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought this was better suited to a Wednesday or even a Thursday.
Embarrassed that I had to finish it before I got the theme. But when I did, I had to smile. Four League....almost a groan....
@Jacqueline Cute one, boss! But like SP above, I don't get the second and third italicized references....
@Lewis For the Santa Tracker...there's a subscription app called ForeFlight--it's an aviation app. Has dozens of features that make flying easier and therefore safer. On Christmas Eve, they get very clever with the weather part of the app. They write in reindeer sightings, Santa being around north of the airfield, and the like. Jingle Bell noise abatement procedures, etc. Fun. But that's not why I came to this part. Is it just me, or the connection between the theme and the fill sorta loosely-goosey? Or did I miss something deeper?
You're obviously not from Noo Yawk.
Not about the crossword, but the Vertex puzzle. Anyone have any idea what it is? I'm totally clueless. I suspect it's going to be generational. ;-)
Great puzzle. Fun to do, and almost tricky. BUT...wait until you try the May monthly bonus puzzle. Arguably the worst I've seen in a few years.
Touches and Shuffles??? Anyone care to tell me what that has to do with the answer on the grid? I'm lost.
The Midi-puzzle was...cute. April 1, and all that.
Hinny? ~HINNY~ ???? Gimme a break.
@gilliang Yep. Which made this an annoying rather than satisfying puzzle. To me, at least. Kind of inane.
regarding g 63, I bet they could if they oiled the string....
Took me a little while to get the theme, but I did have a few glasses of wine before I started....
Is there a place to check out the grids on the monthly puzzles? I don't recall seeing that.
40 down is incorrect. Should end in a "k." Stumped me until I figured out that it got past the eds.
@Jake G I have no problem with that.
Could someone explain ~yesterday's~ 14A answer to me? I got the other 5, but I can't make heads or tails of the top right zigzag.
