so cute! you two rock. thanks for the fresh puzzle!
cute theme, but when the answer clued "spelled unusually" isn't the most contrived one in the grid......
impressive theme and a fun solve to boot. great debut, marshal!
my fiance and i hit our 1000 day streak today! happy pride month to all my fellow gays and girlies and weirdies and wackos out there in crossword land <3
SLADE and LEACHMAN! you learn something new every day... sometimes by pressing each key on the keyboard in order
could we dial it back to one playground retort per week please? and speaking of "one," 65A has to be one of the most contrived clues in nyt history! sorry for being a hater! the rest of the puzzle was cute.
i was disappointed that 26A - What's needed for a "Who's on First?" routine - was not YES! but otherwise great puzzle
since everybody else has already kvetched about almost everything else, i'll say this: i can stomach one spelled-out letter, but two in the same grid! it's just unbecoming...
super contrived puns like these are not my taste, and the rest of the fill was kind of lackluster imo, but i'm glad everyone else had fun
goodbye to my 1156 day streak! if you'd like to join me in donating to the Times Tech Guild's strike fund to help the people who keep the puzzles flowing while they fight for better working conditions, you can find it at gofundme (dot) com (slash) f (slash) nyt-tech-strike-fund union strong :)
@me in nj how could someone carp about WARRENG? most people know him as a hugely popular and influential rapper and producer since the 90s, and those that don't should at least know who the 29th president is. you have two options!
great spanners, but next time, could we clue SYN as "Zest, for life: Abbr." (note the comma!)?
normally i'm not a fan of an Ezersky puzzle but i really enjoyed this one! tough and fun :)
i think fagliano's speaking a different sort of english with the clues he's letting past him. i did appreciate the themed answers at 1D, 3D, 9D, 35D, and 39D, though.
@Whoa Nellie agreed, cluing SALA as "Spanish for 'room'" feels a bit like cluing KITCHEN as "'Cuarto' en ingles" imo
@Jannicut or if you're not quite so fast, then you can listen to Neil Cicierega's album SPIRIT PHONE while you solve. certainly in a similar genre-space as They Might Be Giants! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LeSFBy2bZU
@Aquila agreed. cool theme idea, but it left me wanting a version where *every* roman numeral (or at least every I, V, and X -- C, L, D, M might be a bit too restrictive!) used in the puzzle stood for a number in the themed answers
i swear they save the most punishing saturday grids for when i don't have time friday night and have to scramble to the finish line on saturday night....
brilliant theme, loved the MARx
@Wayne Johnson in the freudian sense, perhaps
