"Southern California city with a Spanish name"? Uh..... all of them?
Just want to share that MALI/SOMALIA fit the clue in 102 Down (but not the grid).
@Jane Wheelaghan”Shoofly pie and apple pan dowdy makes your eyes light up and your tummy say howdy…”
I have to throw a penalty flag on OVERARM. I've heard of overhand, underhand, and sidearm, but never "overarm".
It was unfortunate that "leaders in assists" are often POINTGUARDS which fit perfectly.
I think Arthur ASHE has been cited more in the NYT crossword than he ever was in the Sports section.
Any time a movie sound editor needed a "jungle sound effect", they'd go to the archive and pull out the kookaburra call. Brazil, Africa...doesn't matter. Are there really 2 "L"s in Wooly? Woolly? I'm skeptical.
@Art F Agree. The reason 'acer' is "new to me" is because nobody has ever used it.
@David Connell Glad that you posted this, as I was also going to comment on LITANY. It's not a "pileup" of anything; it's a long, repetitive list. I speak as one who has sat through many litanies in my time as an altar boy in the 1960's.
Happy to see 9 Down, as I've been the owner of many such caps. Go Bears.
Isn't the plural of OX, OXEN? Is "OXES" ever acceptable? And one practically never sees "crap" (in a dice game context) in the singular. It's always "craps". If you roll a 2, 3, or a 12, that's "craps".
@RozzieGrandma Henry Charles Albert David.
Can someone explai to me how "Fairly" = RATHER? Don't get it.
Hmmmm.....I always thought "toe the line" was a track & field reference. Putting your feet up to, but not over, the starting line. Which "feels" more correct than having to do with lining up on a deck.
@Yankee in VirginiaI like to imagine an alternate universe where Iron Man and Spider-Man tanked at the box office, but Master & Commander was a sensation -- spawning sequels (every book in the series), spin-offs, theme parks and TV shows.
@The X-Phile My first entry here was BERT, which caused problems for a while.
