was it intentional that the repeated letter in all the loops was O? for another round thing?
@Nancy I had the complete opposite experience on every point! I found it slightly harder then most Mondays recently- it took me more passes through and I had two mistakes I needed to find once I filled it out. On the other hand, I did understand the WHALE BALL WINE homonyms connection even before I got the revealer filled out, thought that was fun. But, having never heard of the expression HUE AND CRY before I did not find it a terrific revealer :/ Interesting how different people's takes on the puzzle can vary so much.
I would have liked a revealer for this one, not because I needed it (this was one of my fastest ever Mondays) but because if I didn't read the wordplay column I wouldn't've recognized the baseball connection. I zoomed through the puzzle and knew that all the long answers were two words, the second on ending in 'ER' but didn't see the theme (and didn't think/need to look for it?) which is unfortunate because the themes are the most fun part for me.
this one felt tougher than recent thursdays but in a good way - struggling through for a while until the extremely satisfying lightbulb moment of figuring out the theme
My downfall in this puzzle was forgetting the elementary school "i before e except after c or when sounding like ay as in neighbor or way" ... Twice. Ugh. LIEGE. NIECE.
@Eric Hougland Wow! This was NOT an easy one for me, about 4 minutes slower than my usual Tuesday times
this was such a fun puzzle! brought me a lot of joy
New best time for me on this one, to go with my new best Monday time from the start of this week. Fun to see improving over time (assuming that's the reason and the puzzles aren't just getting easier...)
Really enjoyed this one! Some great cluing esp 61D, 6D etc
I felt like the revealer was a bit of a stretch today but the fill was super fun I entered in TOE BEANS on my first pass and was pleased about it but I immediately knew there would be people complaining about it in it since it's such an online millenial/gen z term
This one was super breezy, except for MELLON x ROHE, neither of whom I had heard of. This week, my Tuesday took more than twice as long as each of the Wednesday through Saturday puzzles. Anyone else?
@William this was *much* slower than my typical Wednesday for me! While I was not familiar with Sondheim, I also struggled with the middle. Some puzzles are easier or harder for different folks :)
@Dan I get what you mean about most of those on the list but cosec feels pretty general knowledge to me - like early high school math
This one solved pretty quickly for me, but was still quite fun. Muddled around with SLIDE SHOWS as it was the right number of letters but didn't think it fit the clue quite right...but did not. Put in LEO somewhere, but not in the right place - where I'd put MAY Thought the metal umlauts clue was a stretch / made up term so nice to learn in the coln that it wasn't just coined for this clue.
It turns out that the SkY is not a source of unwanted bugs. I'm just imagining a swarm of mosquitoes descending from above. I know there was a question mark but for some reason I rationalized this as being because bugs aren't actually from the sky. Alas. Not sure why that was my sticking point, but overall I for one really enjoyed this puzzle.
Really loved this one! Fun clues, fun theme.
I generally find it satisfying when I can figure out the theme before I'm done & use it to get parts of the puzzle. This one, I figured out the theme very (too?) early on in my solving and then spent a lot of less satisfying time struggling through the rest (CINERAMA? SIVA? SAGO/SPANS??). It also really did not help that I confidently entered EARTH day as an April celebration. In my defense, ARBOR day is in May where I live.
I really loved this one! a tough one to crack but once I got AVENGERS ENDGAME everything fell into place.
Generally enjoyed this puzzle, but despite being a person who reads a tonnnn of queer fiction, I'm not a fan of 49A. I feel like it's not really a term people use?? and it put two answers where you had to know trivia together and instead it could have just been GAsLIT and sALE and you still could have come up with fun clues for those and it wouldn't have been as esoteric.
@Matt I came to the comment section to say exactly this!
Has anyone else been getting faster every day this week? Monday: 10:00 Tuesday: 9:46 Wednesday: 8:52
Struggled with the middle - confidently entering BRUINS (43A) ( :| ... in my defense it is a sports arena that has 'Garden' in the name) and CAPTAINS (25D) was unhelpful for me. Fun puzzle though!
@Steven M. .... ignore my last comment, I apparently have forgotten how to count
@KA Nelson not sure exactly what you mean here but in case it's the same problem I had: I had a problem where puzzles I'd finished were marked as not completed and the timer was still running up - the fix for me was to open them in a browser, refresh, then open in the mobile app and then refresh the browser again. And if that didn't work, there's a button in the browser that's spaced like a life preserver (?) and in one of the menus under that there's something like "mark as completed", which you can click and then refresh. That normally worked for me but if it doesn't work, or if you need a streak fixed, you can email the nyt crossword email and normally they are pretty quick to get it fixed.
Had a lot of fun with this puzzle, interesting fill, new vocab words and such a great feeling when I figured out the theme. Spent a while with cAPE and cAKE though - cAPEr is close to a prank and cAKE is slang for having things easy, and I'd never encountered those J words in that context before.. alas.
Repetition in the theme opened up the puzzle a lot for me once I got it, but I struggled a fair bit with some of the full, and not necessarily in a fun way
@Joe Monday Wednesday Saturday Thursday Friday Tuesday (more than twice as long as Friday)
