ENISLE??? Seriously??
I’m in Alberta and it’s never abbreviated ALB - it’s AB or Alta.
Sorry to pile on, but KIL is terrible. Nobody, but nobody, would ever use that as a unit. And while we’re picking automotive nits, HUBCAPS don’t protect rims, they protect hubs, from dust infiltration. (To the extent they protect anything, other than being aesthetic choices, or help reduce drag.)
Call me a pedant, but YEAST is not an “ingredient” in a sourdough starter, at least not in the same way it is in non-sourdough bread recipes. It’s present, sure, but not added, so I’d argue it’s not an ingredient.
SEEPY might be the worst crosswordese ever.
Relatively few vehicles get traction from REAR TIREs any more…
I’m not sure if this was a particularly easy puzzle, or if I am just particularly simpatico with the creator, but I romped through this one in under 12 minutes. One thing that occurred to me, though, is that at this point all Pontiacs are “old Pontiacs”, aren’t they?
A little crunchy for a Tuesday - took me over 9 minutes - but a cute reveal.
@Jones Came here to say this. Deeply annoying in that it made my Monday solve time well over five minutes!
@Jay All depends on definitions, I guess. You certainly get lateral acceleration and adhesion, but “traction” implies the application of power and the associated longitudinal acceleration. (Yes, I know, pedantic distinction. What can I say? I’m a car crash investigator.)
6D was surprisingly crude for the NYT…
It’s interesting that the traditional definition means “debatable” but that modern usage, particularly as “MOOT point” means very near the opposite.
Alberta is abbreviated “AB”, not “ALB”… just sayin’…
@Craig I'd like ENISLATE that clue...
As a long time critical thinker, I got this reveal on the first clue, and immediately nailed almost every single one thereafter. Made it a pretty easy solve for me overall, ending up just a hair longer than my all time Sunday personal best of 18:30.
@Ettagale When I played Scrabble with my mother and my 90 year old grandmother, no allowances were made for anybody’s age, and the official Scrabble dictionary was in regular use every game.
@Marty Same here. As an official Dad, it was the obvious answer.
“Zip code” for the NORTH POLE? Ahhh… no. It’s Canadian, thank you very much, with postal code H0H 0H0.
@JohnWM @Brock Savage It's hard to be more authoritative than BMW themselves! "The nickname “bimmer” originated in the 1970s. At the time, BMW automobiles were enjoying something of a boom in popularity in the US. Americans had initially called BMW cars “beamers,” like the motorcycles – with the exception of the Boston Chapter BMW club, whose newsletter has been called “Bimmer” since the 1970s. In the meantime, and entirely independently of the Boston Chapter, an identically titled magazine for BMW fans hit the shelves in the US, and “bimmer” won out as the preferred nickname for BMW cars (as opposed to “beamer” or “beemer” for motorcycles). The name has now been embraced by car fans around the world, even in Germany." <a href="https://www.bmw.com/en/automotive-life/bimmer-beamer-nickname-origin.html#:~:text=The" target="_blank">https://www.bmw.com/en/automotive-life/bimmer-beamer-nickname-origin.html#:~:text=The</a>%20nickname%20%E2%80%9Cbimmer%E2%80%9D%20originated%20in,%E2%80%9CBimmer%E2%80%9D%20since%20the%201970s.
99A and 100D form a literal natick, that required me to get all crossings…
SO close to beating my 4:08 best time ever with this one, except for a typo! Ah, well…
But for the fact that I stumbled on Spanish spellings a couple of times in this one (it’s LOS, not LaS, and NUEVE, not NEUVo) I might have had a personal best. As it is, I merely nearly tied my current PB time of 4:21, at 4:22. Oh, well!
Pretty easy romp led to a personal best of 4:09. Would have been faster but for my initially going with “incas” instead of MAYAS.
@CaptainQuahog I have no idea what the context is for that particular acronym, but for what it’s worth, residents of Alberta use “AB”.
EGOT for the second day in a row, in almost the same location?
Not to be pedantic or anything, but the STANLEY CUP has come to Canada many times in the past few years, albeit not in the possession of a Canadian team. Heck, the Panthers won it in Edmonton last year. So, the clue is just wrong.
@R.J. Smith Same. I was trying to think of some builder slang when I got it on crossings.
An actual natick at 16D/51A. How did that slide by the editors?
The correct term for BMW cars is “Bimmer”, while BEEMER is exclusive to BMW motorcycles.
I found a lot of the clues to be unsatisfying and solved only through crosses. Like, whutinheck is journalESE? And what makes LEO “in summer”?
@OrangeManFascist Easiest one this week for me, expect for Monday - a personal Saturday best of 8;46.
