This reminded me of one of our favorite mugs, which my sister gave my husband (who is a copy editor by profession!) and which says: “i before e… Except when your foreign neighbor Keith received eight counterfeit beige sleighs from feisty caffeinated weightlifters. Weird.” I get a kick every time I open our cupboard and see it!
@debamlen: “My puzzle was marked correct, but I still didn’t understand what I had wrought. So I did the only thing I knew would help: I frowned at it.” I FEEL SO SEEN 😂
Loved this puzzle! (though as usual I told my husband it was “irritating”, ha, as that’s what I say for every puzzle that doesn’t immediately fall into place for me…which is most of them ;). It made me think, stumble around to get a foothold, and taught me a couple new things. Bravo!
@Andrzej As a longtime employee of a large book publisher, yes, we use both stet and stetted, but the latter is basically only used when we’re questioning why a change wasn’t made during an author’s review of their copyedited and/or proofread manuscript. Example: Editor: “Why is this adjective used three times in the same sentence? The copyeditor deleted two instances to avoid repetition.” Production Editor: “The author stetted it during his review. Apparently it’s his favorite word and he can’t bear cutting it.” Hope that helps 🙂
@Bill: Your comment perfectly epitomizes why I love to read the crossword comments. I inevitably learn something new and fascinating! Thank you!
@Lewis “lovely mix of areas that splat-filled and others I had to return to…” That is a perfect way of describing how the solving process often goes 😂
This was easy for me for a Thursday but a cute and clever theme, so it was a fun romp, thanks!
@Times Rita Thank you so much for posting this! My husband and I LOVE all things Latin American—we’re captivated by the incredible range and diversity of cultures, music, art, literature (I read Spanish fluently and he’s learning), etc. But we had not heard of Mercedes Sosa, and after listening to this hauntingly beautiful song, we are hooked and going to listen to all her albums. This is one of the reasons I love the crossword comments space—I learn as much from the commenters sharing their knowledge as I do from the crosswords themselves, and I’m grateful for it.
@Michele G Please make a skee ball themed puzzle! That would be so fun!
@john ezra Bravo!!! Encore, encore!!
@Lewis ha! This would have been another great option for this puzzle
@Andrzej One time I was texting my friend “Happy Birthday” and my phone’s autocorrect decided to send her: “HOBGOBLIN!!!” It was so bizarre, we still cackle about it today 😂😂
@Ιασων having had the privilege to be able to see both rheas and emus in the wild (in Bolivia and Australia), I have to agree rheas are indeed better (or at least cooler) 😉
Great puzzle and a breezy fun Friday, which is welcome after the week I’ve had, whew. One q: Can someone please explain to me the answer to 21A? Can’t quite figure out how the answer means the clue “Red lights in D.C.” I’m prob just reading it wrong so would love to be enlightened 😊
@Cathy Ditto for this millennial woman! 😂
