@R.J. Smith I can believe them! I try to remember that, when it comes to accessibility, other people experience the world differently from me. In this case, I think there could have been a way to present this puzzle (slightly altering the colors, or only outlining the squares, or something!) that would make it a more enjoyable experience for many solvers without taking away from the cuteness of the theme. The optimist in me hopes that there's someone at NYT puzzles who thinks a bit more deeply about accessible graphics design as a result of the comments.
