Although there have been rebus puzzles that have caused me to quit in frustration, I don't hate them- especially now that I consider myself a seasoned solver and know to look for them on Thursday. I thought this one was a nice and easy way for folks to learn how to solve them- Tuesday difficulty with Thursday construction; there are A LOT of entry points with common answers that clearly indicate there is a trick to be sussed out: Sister Act Star Jazz's James Steve of The Office King of the Faries Spanish Grandmother If you're new to this: welcome to rebuses! They can be very challenging but very rewarding, and they show up fairly regularly on Thursdays. The haters gonna hate. Whatever- I really enjoyed this one!
This was the least fun I've had solving a puzzle in a long time. I am glad some of you liked it- it was a complete slog for me. EVENER? THRILLS? DDS? I could not disagree with Caitlin more: the cluing was about as elegant as an ORANG.
@Grant I didn't "get it" until I saw your comment- I just had "IOT.." and surmised the answer from the clue and moved on without further thought. Thanks for turning on the lightbulb for me.
@Barry Ancona In what way is a level - a tool that determines evenness- an evener? By that logic, a tape measure is a... lengthener? The dislike for this puzzle is not the difficulty, it's the poor editing.
Tough but fun- little slower than average, especially after flying through the entire north section of the grid, but a satisfying solve. One nit to pick: I felt the wording of 56a was odd, maybe a miss by the editors; surely that was supposed to be "sites", no? In the context of this clue, "sights" just feels like a reach. Maybe just my personal preference. Either way, great puzzle.
@Barry Ancona I appreciate you taking the time, but the explanation was not necessary- my question didn't stem from confusion. I suppose it's just me disliking the cluing- without a question mark, what is the wordplay, the context where a MAT is a "Welcome sight" (sans quotation marks around welcome)? I am missing where the homonym was invoked. Just a minor quibble with a fun and challenging puzzle.
Hunted for the typo / error long enough to finally give up and scan through the key. KOnA was my stumble (tumble) in an otherwise quick solve- enjoyed the puzzle, thanks.
