Solved it, but could not figure the gimmick until coming here. In what location does "chance" sound like "chants"? Nowhere I know of.
Enjoyed this... Seemed easy for a Thursday (but no complaints!). Got the gimmick very easily, and clues were all reasonable, no super-cryptic words or phrases; crosses got me the stuff I didn't know. Nice job.
The obvious answer to 24 across is "trumpism", but it doesn't fit.
Loved it :) I thought the title was a give-away for the hyphens (I only realized the "line" quite late on), and don't really understand all the grumbling here about the construction.
The nested clues seemed very easy (even easier with the Russian dolls clue...). And no super obscure words or overly convoluted clues. Got it in record time (for me; for a Thursday), with no need to come here or to Google, and no groaning or swearing. But , it was enjoyable - nice to have an approachable Thursday puzzle :).
Took me some time. Had no idea that "long-neck" has its world-day on June 21, so very educational. Oodles of fun, great x-word; brava to the constructor !
@K - Never mind - I figured it... Needs a D and a G. Oy!
If you live in Las Vegas or have a gaming addiction, the theme presumably makes sense. If not, ugh.
@Isabeau -- Ditto; I could not figure the theme even after solving the whole thing. Seemed disingenuous.
The clue for 21 across is genius. I couldn't get it, but got all the down crossings that revealed it... I laughed out loud when I saw the answer.
Nice! Approachable, enjoyable, and non-frustrating Thursday and Friday puzzles this week :)
@SP -- It's also the era of the "video game" kids and the "social media nonsense" kids. The sports trivia was annoying, but at least mainstream; the online crapola and juvenilia is no fun at all.
Managed to complete it in 38 mins., using the crosses for the weird answers, but even when finished I could not figure the trick or the weird answers until I came here. (e.g., I thought "BAR HOP" referred to hops used to make beer, linking to 51A; and some other odd ideas...). Clever puzzle.
Wow, a real slog, but very rewarding. Red herring festival.
@Francis - Nope, just got a blurry blue square with a ?. Answers disappeared, but message says I completed it. Couldn't figure if it was a glitch.
I solved it, but I still don't get IALO (116 across). Can someone explain it? Thanks
Figured the across gimmick pretty much immediately -- whole thing was then very easy... clues were very straightforward. Fastest Thursday solve ever !
80, 86, and, especially, 113 across had me laughing out loud when I figured them. Great fun. Brava!
(Mercifully) easy for a Thursday... but I think it's OK to have a gimme Thursday now and then.
Looked scary, but the crosses helped with stuff I didn't know... ended up close to my Saturday record time. Fun (and educational) !
@Juanita -- Ditto -- weird clue; weird overall.
118A... Surely you mean ABBA, not Abba ?!
@J --Yup, I'm a British speller too. It seemed disingenuous when I finally figured it. Oh well.
@RichardZ -- Better yet, "Important law school subject currently ignored by SCOTUS". Or, "Important law school subject currently ignored by POTUS".
Great Thursday puzzle! Loved the theme, which was not too difficult; and no super obscure words. Great fun!
When I got up this morning, I thought it was Thursday. My calendar must be off... it's only Monday :)
@SEAN - I'm a Brit, where it's pronounced (as in the Stones' song) "chews-day" (or "tews-day"), not as per the US "toos-day". Until I read the explanation, I could not figure out what these had to do with bingo!
