Cute theme and fun solve, but… THERE IS NO B STREET IN DC! Not unless you have a time machine. The Bs were renamed Constitution and Independence in the 1930s. I believe this is the second time I’ve seen this error in a NYT crossword. It’s starting to feel like a deliberate snub. ;-)

Cute theme, really hard to read in the app. I often couldn’t tell which clue I was on. I toggle between the across and down clues continuously because I’m one of those “cross solve only” folks (is there a term for us solvers who can only attempt a clue if it intersects a previously solved clue?). So not being able to see which clue I was on was an annoyance in an otherwise fun puzzle. Also ran this one by my red-green colorblind son and he couldn’t distinguish the colors. Not a biggie; he’s used to struggling occasionally in a color-based world. But I’ll always throw some awareness whenever color is fundamental to a game that color-based play doesn’t work for a significant portion of the population. Hats off to all of the other people with cone differences who had an extra challenge today!

Double Katz kudos! What a clever and brilliant theme. Can’t even begin to imagine how they came up with all of those pairs x 2. Thanks for a fun solve!

I hate when people who can read music assume everyone else can. The themed clues were meaningless to me. Luckily, the cross solves were easy. But this felt like too exclusive a theme for the gen pop. No fun for those of us who aren’t trained musicians.

Cute and clever. Except it was kind of bad rebus form to have repeated words. Out of the six HOLEs, three were actually the word HOLE and two were WHOLE. A little more variety would have made for a more elegant puzzle. But I’m sure it was a really tricky construct.

1. Rebuses are sooooooo tedious if you play via the app (as I do). Having to toggle between keyboards is a drag and disrupts the solve flow. This puzzle was nearly all rebuses, which made for way too much time inputting. 2. I was disappointed that there wasn’t more of a twist to the theme than all the periphery squares doubling up. I was expecting the letters to spell out something or some other clever twist. The cluing was pretty easy for a Thursday once I cracked the theme, so my biggest takeaway was the tedium of all that rebus toggling without much of a challenge. Verdict: More hassle than fun.

@Patrick I don’t mind them from time to time. In fact, I’m one of those solvers who looks forward to the outside-the-box twists that Thursdays can offer. But from a purely interfacing perspective, filling them in on an iOS keyboard is clunky. It takes two extra clicks to input them, which is enough to disrupt the flying flow that you can achieve on a traditional puzzle. And a puzzle with mostly rebuses? That’s enough to make doing the crossword about as fun as filling out tax forms in triplicate.

SCROD is any young white, flaky fish. Could be haddock, but doesn’t have to be. It’s commonly cod, too. Or whatever the cheap catch of the day is. Other than that nit, I thought it was a fun puzzle!
