My first six-letter beer guess was TECATE, but then I thought "no, CORONA fits better with the theme."

Well, that was a thing. The first theme entry I got was BASSISTS, before the revealer, which I parsed as BASS ASSISTS, i.e. things to assist you in catching bass. I already had LOOPER, which reinforced this notion of looping around the answer to form something that fit the clue. It looked like fun! But that was not it.
