I like the Thursday gimmicks; they're fun, whether refuses or other shenanigans. However, I solve in the app, and this is one that would have worked better with pencil and paper. I got the trick when I got the revealer BUTT OUT, and I realized something tuchas-related would be outside of the grid. And that explained some of the entries that seemed to be missing a letter, but didn't really seem like a rebus would work in both directions. But there's really not a way (that I know of) to add letters beyond the confines of the grid in this app. So maybe next time I run across this kind of tomfoolery, I'll print the puzzle, then I may scribble as I please. Fun trick and challenging puzzle! Overall, I enjoyed it. Thank you, Dan Caprera and Will Shortz. I imagine there will be complaints... this kind of buffoonery doesn't sit well with the more rigid solvers.
Congratulations, Ryan Judge on your college graduation and this wonderful puzzle! What a fun way to mark the occasion. ๐๐ I especially loved DINO shaped chicken nuggets. โค๏ธ๐ฆ๐ I hope your next move is law school, so you can one day be Judge Judge! ๐คฃ (sorry, I can't help it)
Ughhhh I think that was the first time ever that OBOE was one of the last entries I filled in!! ๐คฆโโ๏ธ๐คฆโโ๏ธ๐คฆโโ๏ธ I even thought, well Yamaha makes a lot of different products... vehicles, instruments... and why didn't I think to try OBOE? ๐คฆโโ๏ธ They actually make pretty decent oboes. One of my students has a Yamaha oboe.
The OBOE is NOT cylindrical. It is conical. It may appear cylindrical from a distance, but it is in fact significantly narrower at the top than at the bottom. This is one of the things, in addition to the double reed, that makes the oboe's sound so distinctive from the clarinet, which is actually cylindrical. The conical bore is also one of the reasons the oboe is such an expensive instrument. The wood - usually grenadilla, sometimes rosewood - has to be especially hard and well-aged to withstand the conical boring process. Here is a fascinating video on how an oboe is made. https://youtu.be/_xOj9bLkYVQ?si=D7SCdfB_pn09XYP9
@Zรฉzito I expect Thursday level tomfoolery, which this certainly was! ๐๐๐
Fun puzzle! Congrats on finally getting a submission accepted, for persevering after all those rejections. It was definitely worth the effort! ๐
Annoying, but also hilarious! ๐คฃ Much better than my lame attempt at an April Fool's joke, asking the snare drum soloist I was accompanying if he'd like a tuning note. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
@Dan yeah, I felt the same way. In HINDsight, I wish I'd printed out the puzzle. Maybe next time.
Wow, this puzzle is brilliant! I am impressed. ๐
@Asher๐ค what a weird thing to say! How is it unfair?
I wasn't aware that Hemingway had "Papa" as a nickname, but I have heard "Papa Haydn." There's even a little children's song, to the tune of the Surprise Symphony (mvt.2). Papa Haydn's dead and gone, But his memory lingers on. When his tune was one of bliss He wrote jolly tunes like this.
@Marie more importantly, I hope you'll get some sleep! ๐ซ๐ด
Fantastic puzzle! It was a joy to solve. Love this movie! Even better than the book.
TIL that the little jingle that plays at the end of the crossword puzzle is called the San Josรฉ Strut. I'm so excited to learn its name and find its link on YouTube! So glad I read Wordplay today! ๐ Thanks, Deb! (It's the little things...)
A fun puzzle indeed!! A cute gimmick, yet very fair and straightforward. Also, timely with all the pollen in the Air! ๐คง
@Marshall Walthew I hadn't heard of ARLO Parks before, but I'm glad now that I have! I looked her up, and she has a lovely voice. Certainly a refreshing change from cluing ARLO Guthrie all the time. Sometimes I am put off by the difficulty of Saturday puzzles, but the reward for persevering is often learning something new and worthwhile. Grateful for entries like CCR that helped me get a toe hold!
Re: 24D: I was told there would be no math... ๐
Hmm. I've never heard of "hue and cry," so this theme went totally over my head. Woosh! Otherwise, a fun puzzle.
@Deb Amlen did you fix it by frowning at it? ๐คฃ๐คฃ
@sotto voce ooohhh! Yes, definitely thene-related! ๐๐ช
@Mike yes, I felt the same way, thia one would have been a great one to solve on paper!
@Steve L even if you haven't heard of it, it was certainly guessable, once you have a few crossings. KIM is a common Korean surname, and CONVENIENCE is a synonym of corner store. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
@Isabeau โค๏ธ๐ฆ๐ yes! DINO was my first thought for nugget shape since they were my daughter's favorite when she was little. (Who are we kidding... she still loves them as a teenager. ๐คฃ) but no, can that be right?? I was weirdly excited when I had enough crossings to confirm that DINO is correct!
@Eric I had a weird week, too. I found Wednesday's puzzle to be more difficult than Thursday's. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
What a fun and inventive puzzle! I've been re-watching Homeland, so SPIKE POLYGRAPH was at the forefront of my brain.
Ohhhh cities in California! ๐คฆโโ๏ธI was expecting it to be ingredients of CALIFORNIA ROLLS. (Avocado, cucumber, etc)
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of Silence of the Lambs at 32D.
It was a fun solve. The "direction following" was a fun spin on the rebus. ๐
@Dave S but at least this is one puzzle that foreigners can't complain is too US-centric! ๐คฃ
A Jeopardy! themed crossword puzzle is my absolute dream come true! ๐
@OboeSteph and 100D! Sacre bleu!
@Sally no such thing as too much OBOE ๐๐ถ
Oof, this theme went right over my head! ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
@Dave agreed! A very gun puzzle and theme!
@OboeSteph ugh *very gun I really should proofread my comments before I hit "submit!" ๐
Oof, today's puzzle was a tough one for me. I needed Deb's help to get 41A. Once I filled that in, I started to be able to crack my way in, and ended up enjoying it. DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS was tricky, even though I have a reed-soaking glass (shotglass) with that phrase (not jumbled up); but I did figure out spilled MILK, EGGS, and CART before the HORSE.
@OboeSteph *rebuses and other shaninigans (not refuses, stupid autocorrect)
VAL Kilmer died?!? ๐ฎ I had no idea! ๐ข Earlier this year, evidently.
@Sara O'Bannon Warner Bros. is trying to gaslight us.
I wish 2SET had been clued as the Violin duo! ๐ป๐ป https://youtube.com/shorts/AK9DMi5TUV4?si=mkrP0JAYcncCUup3
@Sean M.๐ rebuses are perfectly cromulent entries in crossWORD puzzles.
@Grant ...heads to wine store.... For the cat, of course! ๐ป I genuinely think Garfield would love a wine cork.
@john caywood I thought it was venisae? ๐๐ฆ๐ฆ
@Eric Hougland thanks, Eric. ๐ @Francis indeed we do. One needs a strange sense of humor to play the oboe. ๐คช If we didn't laugh, we'd cry. It's a difficult instrument, but so beautiful when played well. Until the reed goes wonky ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ ๐ถ
Tosswords looks like fun! ๐
@Jeb Jones that's so strange that the text says beep beep but it clearly sounds like meep meep. I feel so gaslit!
