I thought this might have been a nit-pick, but I looked it up and confirmed that a GRILL is just a thing you cook on (or its verb form) and doesn't go on an air vent. That's a GRILLE.
@Beth in Greenbelt "Galaxy Quest" is indeed brilliant and much more than a spoof. I rarely use this arty word, but is a(n) homage. Any Trekkie who doesn't have Galaxy Quest in their rotation is missing out.
@Monika Eckhart A key statistic for baseball pitchers is Earned Run Average, or ERA. The lower the ERA, the better the pitcher.
I confidently wrote SCARF in 18-down and just thought SALOC was a new word to me. Dang. If not for searching through the whole thing for that mistake, woulda had the thing done in 15 or so. Not really keen on LASH AT either, but hey, I've never had a puzzle published in NYT so I shouldn't criticize.
Great puzzle honoring a lot of great people. I'm with some other commenters in wishing that the non-theme clues would have been harder, as befits a Sunday puzzle. Surely the estimable Mr. Shortz could have seen to that.

"I'm so mean I make medicine sick." - It's ALI, but sounds like something that would have been attributed to Chuck Norris, like "When he does pushups, the earth moves" I do usually hope for more than 14 minutes of entertainment on a Thursday, but still it was a fun solve.
