@david dell no rebus in this one. If whiskey is served neat, it means there's no ice. So for the theme answers, "ice" is removed.

I don't comment often (ever, really), but I wanted to thank you Deb and add my well wishes to the hundreds of others here. I started doing crosswords a few years ago. I never thought I'd be able to do them unaided. Especially Fridays and Saturdays. But because of your column, I slowly but surely improved. Today I finished this Friday without lookups at almost half my average Friday time. Crosswords are the highlight of my morning now. Thank you for your years of thoughtful and humorous instruction. You will be missed. Wishing you all the best, Kimberly B from NC

Gay bar! 🤦‍♀️ How did I get that wrong?? I thought it was wordplay for drag racing and answered NASCAR. 1D. NOL - must be a British thing 3D. SETI - Yeah I've never heard of it, but the clue did say it's elusive 4D. COSSANOVA - I've never heard of bossa nova either, so why not? Time to go broaden my cultural horizons and learn more about sports and music.

Wow, loved this! I got the revealer immediately, but didn't catch onto the trick for ages. Finally 32-down clued me in, and it all came together. I was more than 20 minutes over my average, and enjoyed every minute.

@Marcelo I actually found the pattern rather consistent. Each word across has two sets of the rebuses. If the first one is IE, then the second would always be EI. And the vertical clue would always have the opposite pattern as the horizontal one.

@The X-Phile I think they actually meant it as Athena double-crossed Arachne. Arachne arguably won the contest, but Athena punished her anyway for her hubris.
