It's an error in my book, and that's coming from someone usually willing to give constructors a lot of room for interpreation even when others may not. The song released in 1999. It was also performed at the 2022 Super Bowl half time show and ended up back on the charts that year. So technically it is also a hit in 2022. But a date reference like that used in this clue is understood to be release date.
@Dan I'm in support of LINE not being accepted while ---- is, because if LINE is entered the downs make so sense. The fundamental gimmick of this one is you have a row of dashes from correct down clues to substitute for the word "line". Writing in LINE makes both the downs and crosses (per the title and revealer) wrong.
