I diligently plodded through this slog of a puzzle, only to not get any animation. You know, when the columnist has to work that hard to explain the theme, it’s not a good puzzle.

I thought I was moving along nicely but solved five minutes longer than avg Thurs. to me, that’s the sweet spot. Challenging, but feeling like I’m progressing. That’s very rewarding.

That might be the fastest I’ve ever figured out the Thursday gimmick. FANT in the SW corner triggered it, thankfully, or I still might be suffering through it! Fun puzzle!

A tale of two halves for me. The center diagonal came to me pretty easily but the NW and the east central slowed me way down. Overall, just the right amount of crunch.
