@Eva H. And with this comment we have young Jackson’s villain origin story.
Fun fact: with today’s puzzle, Ani DiFranco has now appeared in more puzzles than the number of albums she has sold.
No one puts their GPA on their resume for years. Technically it’s not something that can used in evaluating a candidate since GPA has no statistical relevance on how someone will perform in their job. Just because an employer asks you a question doesn’t mean they know what they’re talking about or that they even should ask that question.
A lemon drop may be in a martini glass along with a whole host of other alcoholic aberrations. That does not make it a martini.
@MmmmHmm so because YOU don’t know something then it’s not valid. Sorry that’s not how life works. And sorry that you’ve never heard of indie labels/musicians, or perhaps we should spell it out…Independent. There’s a whole world out there. Maybe use the opportunity of not knowing something to learn about it instead of expecting the world to cater to your level of understanding.
52a and 53a—nobody over thought, “Maybe given the events of this week that we should edit those clues a bit?”
“Gin Martini” is redundant
MIA is a bit more than an absence. Actually it’s a lot more than an absence. Not good clueing.
Lots of good aha moments. But nearly double my average time.
Zipped through this one at an almost PB rate. Love anagrams, and clueing at 126 was great and chuckle-inducing. Felt like a win today.
Fun puzzle theme and almost beat my record. But there is something a little sad when it’s solved so quickly.
@Chris classic episode where Ross says, “Pivot! Pivot!”
I’ll take the wins wherever I can get them these days. Beat my average time by more than half and best by like 5 minutes. And no go backs either!!
2024 is not the Year of the Dragon. Enumerating the year as 2024 is a Western construct. 4722 is the actual year correctly associated with this Year of the Dragon.
@Joseph thank you for that. And thank you alluding to that lack of sensitivity on the part of the editors. Surely there was time change the clueing.
@TLC totally agree. A bit disrespectful to those that served.
“The Bear” is a comedy. Among the 21 Primetime Emmy Awards is one win for Outstanding Comedy Series, two acting wins for White and Moss-Bachrach, and single acting wins for Edebiri and Colón-Zayas—all in comedy acting categories. The Bear has also won five Golden Globe Awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2024.
@Pat there were 12 Apostles—each of whom was at the Last Supper. Apostles could all be considered disciples but not all disciples were Apostles.
@Byron agreed. Tone deaf clueing and editing.
Even though people have — for years — been complaining and asking that the derogatory term for those of Japanese descent be retired from the puzzle Will Shortz and the rest of the editorial board at NYT refuse to listen. We never see “English slang for cigarette” used as a clue. I guess we know his priorities. If someone asked you nicely to not use a word that brings back painful triggers for thousands of people, why can you just honor that? It’s called being a decent person.
@Dave hi, I have the kettle on line one.
@Jess still a comedy. Not all humor is guffawing.
@Amy still a comedy. Not all comedy is guffawing. But I’ll let my wife know you disagree with her.
@Andrzej oh the horror of it all? Will we ever survive?
I don’t like to criticize those who go what I can’t but the theme today was just meh.
@Barry Ancona always the apologist.
