Deb-- "bosun" is already a short form for "boatswain" (pronounced "bosun", because British English....).
Bajo / Baja mean low or lower, Alto / Alta mean high or upper. As in Baja California / Alta California, provinces of New Spain. Alta California is now known as California and Nevada.
@dutchiris And those vaccines they're marketing would be to fight off the flu *virus*....so a "viral marketing campaign".
@Nancy Horchata is probably regional...very common in the Southwest as a delicious accompaniment to Mexican food. A perfect solution if the salsa is too spicy!
@Jane Wheelaghan SWEET SIXTEEN connects to the clue at 16 Across, which is SPOT, giving you the answer to "Part of a bat that gives the best contact" or the SWEET SPOT. In the same way, CATCH TWENTY TWO becomes CATCH AIR, and AREA FIFTY ONE becomes AREA CODES. Slang terms are of course more difficult in the "other" version of English. I don't do very well with British puzzles, myself.
