Ayn and Mao creep in to a bar… …for even sworn enemies must set aside combat for a Bud.
I often enjoy rebuses, but very rarely am I left opining that they were the easy part. This puzzle did just that, though. Some truly arcane fill today. Not sure it balanced out for me in the end.
Re: 50A clue - too soon, too soon!!
@B One need not travel halfway around the world to find a metric locale that shudders at the idea of abbreviating “kilometre” as “kil.” I can’t recall ever seeing such a shortform used up here either.
Deb, it’s always a pleasure to take a look at the author on these columns and see your name - it means it’s going to be a fun and witty wordplay commentary. All the best to you and thanks for the many great contributions over the years.
Very happy with today’s puzzle. Clever, understandable, and inoffensive rebus. Clicked well with the fill, too.
@Red Carpet I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Plenty of us Torontonians are wont to forget about the existence of provinces other than Ontario. :)
Among my faster Friday solves. Not sure if it was easier than usual, or if I was just on the same wavelength as the author. Either way, very enjoyable. :)
@Marshall Walthew Surely WIRY SIMILE’s alternate phrase is WRY SMILE, no?
@L On a closer read, I now see what you mean — all of the other theme clues require removal of all the I’s, except for this one. I oughtn’t comment at 1 in the morning. Doh!
@Sam Corbin Crashes seem to have abated (thank you!), but I am still getting the warning about “This reveal or hint will lose your streak” every single time I go for a word or puzzle check on puzzles from way back in the archive that have nothing to do with a streak. It didn’t do this previously, it is incredibly annoying, and I hope it is not an intended behaviour (why would it be??)! App version 6.32.0 on iOS.
