@David Johnson. Smart on your part - it is what you would expect from Sam - deceptive clues, obscure references and “broey”???? Doable but not much fun.
I generally try not to be judgmental as I have great respect for what constructors are able to do. Saturdays are intended to be difficult but this was at another level - and not in a good way. Obscure cluing and silly fill (“shorta” and “cber” come to mind) - no aha moments or chuckles, just head shakes. My apologies.
Maybe Wednesday level - 9:16, which is 8 minutes less than prior PB! Expect Saturday will be “rough” PS Clearly it is spidey sense. Surprising that a college student would have tried to sneak that by. Should not have made it past edit.
Liked the theme, but some of the fill was less than stellar - alop? Stenog?
Hate to be a hater, but between Tuesday and this one, rough week for the NYT Crossword Team! The search for “clever” gimmicks continues, but clearly no substitute for good cluing and solid fill.
Hmm… Friday so much harder than Saturday - horses for courses
@Grant Actually no - Stiller was Frank Costanza but Estelle Harris played Estelle Costanza - but both were brilliant
I am generally on the same wavelength as Mr. McCarty - but this was much too easy for a Saturday - 4 seconds over (my already outlying) PB. Other than the spans, this was Tuesday- Wednesday level. Having said that, plenty of time for other pursuits Sat morning!
@suzyxox In the sense that they both are slangish terms - like buddy or pal - for a (generally young but not always) man or boy
@GRS Agree, as I often do, as to Wordlebot. Of the 4 possible solutions after second guess, I picked all the wrong ones first - as apparently so did most others from the stats; except, of course for the ever clairvoyant bot, who always picks the right one first with no basis whatsoever. If I ever meet him/her/it on the street…
Yesterday 1:50 Today 0:20 Go Figure!
@Bill - Didn’t love the puzzle but revisiting Newyorkstan made my day - thanks!!
Much easier than yesterday, although the cluing was quite clever - ya never know
@Alexandra Dixon I feel you, but with a twist. As my father used to say: “I get it… but I don’t want it. Not hard to solve, but theme was too awkward for me.
I have checked and double checked (with subscriber answer key) and still shows as something is wrong. Any ideas, particularly as to entry of numbers?
@Ainsley Amazing time. I had a PB at 6:19, and I didn’t hesitate or stop once. You must have amazing fingers!
Liked the theme and the construction - but I found much of the fill to be awkward.
