@Mu One did not need to leave the squares blank. One cold fill in the doubled letters as a rebus. The brilliance is that it works either way.
@Xword Junkie, I am sure that in one point in my life I knew that "op-ed" was short for "opposite the editorial page", but obviously I forgot that! Thanks!
Very clever use of the rebuses. I could predict before I got to the comments that this would be divisive. :-)
@Amber Per the revealer, you need to "square" the rebus TWO to make FOUR, then the down answer is YEAR O[F OUR] LORD.

@Aidoch Ross To my knowledge, they still have not appeared. Despite lots of folks asking about it the the Wordplay comments are a week, there has been no mention from NYT. (Or I've missed it.)

I was surprised to see the word "opinion" in the clue for the answer OPED, as (kinda) violating the principle that the clue doesn't contain any words from the answer. But that's pretty picky, I suppose.
