Congrats, Kate, on a marvelous NYT debut! Very clever and satisfying. You and your puzzle-loving family should be proud today. (And, yipes stripes, don't listen to the whiners!)

@Ms. Billie M. Spaight In the Disney movie, there is a scene where Pinocchio grows donkey ears. Check it out. Also, MRE is a common crossword clue--stands for "Meal Ready-to-Eat." Per the internet: "They are self-contained, individual field rations designed for military personnel but also used for emergency preparedness." And finally, we always used to say "I spy with my little eye," so maybe you played a different game? No errors in this puzzle.

Following up on my Caitlin-directed "vintage" comment re: old comics, what about this for a clue? Perhaps the comic MUTT and _______________ the gap between vintage and contemporary??

Fun! The first rebus I got was LUCA from the crosses. I'd never heard of it, so I figured it must connect to the S that follows and have something to do with George LUCAS. That tripped me up for a while until I found SOUL and UP, which I knew. So...all in all, very clever, and congrats to you, Avery Gee Katz!

Thank you, Kareem for your hard work! Super fun and no hair pulling involved, just trusting I'd get there. I print it out and solve in pen, so I didn't get the animation part that others have mentioned but I still "spun" the wheels in my mind. Loved the entire "course correction" concept and the multiple payoffs all along the way.

Loved the theme, the halving. Very clever! Fave = Groucho. Did not love IM/DM in the same puzzle (ugh) and, as others have said, too many rap/pop culture references (not Boomer friendly) but I solved via the crosses anyway.

Loved it. Thanks, Brandon. I print it out from the website and even though I could really use a magnifying glass for the ones that default to a one-page PDF, I stuck with it. Super satisfying to catch all the levels of cleverness! MENSCH/O/IRS?! Brilliant. Ditto DECO/D/ERRING. Well, all of them. I have never heard of IMGUR or ERHU, so those hung me up but, all in all, A+!!

Very enjoyable and more challenging than some recent Sundays. I filled the entire grid (I print it out) but had only noticed three of the "base pairs" so I hunted around for the other two (OSIRIS/SET and MUFAS/SCAR)--how could I have not registered those duplications the way I did when I came across the two BRUTUSES (Bruti?). Anyway, even without italics (printed and ink saver mode), I dug down and got there with my pink highlighter to show the double crosses. Bravo, Gene!

I didn't know it was because I print it out under "ink saver" that I never see italics in my NYT puzzles so I didn't even know which ones were italicized. I'm imagining the perks, yes? I suppose that would've helped me catch the "intersections," but I enjoyed solving it nevertheless. I watched "Friends" and the whole theme and the title were very clever. Thanks, Rich!

So fun and satisfying! Still smiling as I type. Brilliant theme, impossibly complex construction (bravo on all the hard work, Jeffrey and Jeff), and ultra-clever cluing. The only downside for me was how tiny the print is on the "special puzzle" PDF, which is the only option for those of us who do it via old-fashioned pen and paper. But, it was worth it to move my glasses up and down and back and forth!

Great job! Loved the challenge. I print it out and do it in pen so it was easier to find the four letters than I imagine it would be online. 93A blew me away. I startled my cat when I shouted out, "ONE C in the whole puzzle?! Are you $&#@-ing kidding me?! How did they do that?!" I'm actually curious, Zhou and Kevin, when you decided to do that, how much of a burden/challenge was it to pull it off? Hope you see this!

Like Patrick, I never had any conflicts in 69A and settled in with SOUTHEAST. So I was puzzled...so to speak. I did appreciate the geographically appropriate placement of the theme clues, but I had no idea why SOUTHEAST "really" fit all 8 answers, and then came here. Really brilliant, Simeon! Thank you for this treat. Now I've printed out the 2014 puzzle and will tackle that tomorrow as a bonus.

Sheesh. Tough one, but very clever and satisfying. Lots of talking out loud to myself, e.g., "The downs are always correct. The stray letter is always in the across...," like that. I print it out to do in pen, so there were no italics in the print version. I had to slog through the list and circle every pair after a while because I kept going around and around--I can't imagine having to do that on a phone or on the electronic version. Will look up the Kwong's archived puzzles, though. Challenges ahead!

Delightful puzzle with the theme layers revealing themselves over time. I print it out in large print, which, apparently, strips out any formatting, so I didn't see those italicized clues, but it all made sense anyway. Fun! Looking forward to Natan's appearance at Harvard Bookstore on the 10th!

I was confused about the theme until I finally got 86A, then it was a fun ride after that. I agree with others that 102A was a strrretch. Loved 28A, 80A, and appreciated a new take on 120A. Didn't outright know 7D and cross with 27A didn't help (another math reference?) forced me to guess. But major congrats to Ginny (and her dad, by proxy). Great job!

Loved it, super clever! Got tied up on 35D for a while, thinking it was SCARLE T/A but finally figured it out. My only teeny complaint is that HOLLAND is a noun and DUTCH is an adjective. I wanted the parts of speech to match, but it didn't interfere with the solve. Also, I still don't understand NONE OF for 70A? Haven't looked through all the comments. Anyone?

Easy and fun solve. Clever! Thanks, Daniel and Rafael. Loved the 30A clue, which instantly came to mind before I even looked at the grid. Agree with CLM re: 46A & 56A, sadly. Not a fan of 84A. Too much of a stretch for my taste. Finally, we still have the 45 for 64A. Ha!

U of M alum here. Fun and clever premise. Too easy, though. The only place I even had to pause was the intersection of 118A and 109D. No idea on the latter. Fun, super clever! I smiled the whole time and enjoyed the anticipation of each NAME reveal. (Note to Caitlin: "Vintage" is quite the euphemism for OLD. I'll have to start using that.) Loved 51A, 45D, and laughed out loud at the clue for 50D. Perfection. Thanks, Derrick! Question (if you're reading the comments): Can Tosswords be played with three or four people?

I print out my puzzles and usually solve them in pen, but after reading the note, I switched to pencil for the first time in years. An easy but super-satisfying solve and fun to visualize each option, one at a time. Not sure what happens when you solve digitally? Thanks, Michael Schlossberg, for the hard work!

A fun, easy solve. Great job, Meghan! I'm old enough to remember VHS tapes but didn't know Devo. Ha! Got stuck momentarily thinking 83A somehow ended in MISSION but BARAD MISSION didn't make sense. Kind of like mixing up the syllabification of words like BED RAGGLED or DO WAGER...

Thanks, John, for a fun ride! It must have been hard to wait 18 months! Had to look up Oahu thank-you cross with digestive enzyme. Oh well. Fun solve and clever clues. I didn't know some of the math symbols but figured out the answers anyway. Since I print out a hard copy, and puzzles with any symbols or odd font things require a one-page PDF, it makes it very hard to see the tiny letters and faint symbols. I need to buy a magnifying glass!

Fun, easy solve, but I didn't catch the theme and wondered what the title referred to and what was the deal with the "re" repetition. I print it out, so I didn't see Will's intro, but the second I saw the reference to "double entendre," I finally got it. Glad I didn't see that beforehand--I think it would've spoiled it! Great job, Rich and Jeff!

Fantastic. And I'm fine with OLIO, Michael Schlossberg. I print it out so, because of the scissors graphic, the PDF was crammed onto one page in like three-point font, which makes me crazy, but it went quickly and was super satisfying to solve. Brilliant concept.

I loved it. I print it out, which sometimes gives me a different rebus experience (so I gather) from the online crowd. Grateful for the instruction about the "letters" in the circles and reading them left to right, so I knew the circle would contain just one letter, despite my urge to put the rebus there (which of course failed instantly, as Caitlin said, for "rebranded," etc.). I also loved how unusual it was to have the free-floating rebuses NOT in the circle AND of different lengths. A real treat! Thanks, David!
