@T. Shulaise - my thought exactly. Has anyone, ever, taken a gander at the Eiffel Tower and thought, “yup, looks just like a rod! Why isn’t this thing called the Eiffel Rod?”
@Sam Ezersky - all well and good but you and the editor still have to explain how “uh oh” is one word. And, “gah”? Seriously? Did you slap your head and say “d’oh” when creating this clue?
@Richard I came to make this comment. I tried as long as I could to find the “one word” response. And it was “uh oh”? How is that one word!?
No problem admitting my reading error for 50D. I was stuck for a while trying to recall what “friends” I could remember from folklore. Elves? Were they friendly? But let’s be real- self command? Every human has self command. Unless they’re hypnotized? It’s just not a requirement to “stay calm”. Terrible clue/answer. And, problem one? Problem one is that answer. A real stretch.
