@B I suppose you would have preferred s graphic of the Grinch?
A moment to crow: with this puzzle I begin year 3 of my streak!
@logical I expected an animation as well, and a gust of fresh air as the door opened.
Some awkward stuff (sopor, soli?), but it’s nice to see an “easy a” Wednesday every now and then.
@sotto voce Well said. I concur.
The subtlety of this puzzle's theme is right up my alley. Unfortunately, I completely missed the turn for my alley, yet made it to my destination in good time nonetheless.
@NYC Traveler Didn't the Magn(a c)arta have something in it about no rebuses on Wednesdays?
@Guy William Molnar That's part of what I enjoy about the crossword, when my mind stretches just beyond what it believes it's already understanding.
What a great puzzle, a super enjoyable Wednesday. Thanks.
@Eva H. Once you understand the puzzle's theme, you'll get it.
Great Friday themeless puzzle. As usual for Friday, there were still many blank squares after the first pass, but I chipped away at it. My brain loves that kind of work.
@Agent86 I like that perspective.
@Bill in Yokohama If only. "Mini" usually isn't accurate in that context.
This puzzle had an "retro" feel to me, maybe something about the style of cluing?
@Steve L There's nothing casual about 3333 consecutive crosswords in a row! I recently passed 800 and feel a second wind coming on. 600 to 750 felt like work at times, especially on Sunday, but puzzles like today's put a smile on my face and make me look forward to Saturday.
"Head turner at a racetrack" is now one of my favorite clues.
@Trish Because it's not a rebus puzzle.
It never ceases to amaze me, the intersections between a given days crossword and the happenings in my life it mysteriously mirrors. Today is a great example. I successfully negotiated the sale of my home to a word of mouth connection. In one of my emails I used the term "seal the deal." The central accomplishment of my day, and lo, there it later appeared at the very center of the puzzle.
@Nancy J. Me too! I usually only check out the comments here on Thursday to see how much whining is going on.
That was like doing push-ups on my fingertips…
Not a fan of this one. Slogged through. IMMIX? I found a lot of the cluing to be clumsy. It was nice to see Ned Beatty get a nod.

New Saturday personal best. Not that it felt easy, but I guess all the mental gears were engaged this morning.
@Greg L. And yes, I got stung by “abysm” as well.
@Zézito Who has told us that?
@Francis I agree. Part of the fun of Thursday and some Sunday puzzles is figuring out what the puzzle is.
@Dave Munger It was a onetime model, just as every Chevrolet no longer in production were onetime models.
@Patrick The tricky clues link has been wonky for a while now, taking me either nowhere or to random places within the NYT. I figured it was just me.
A-1, aces, super-duper Sunday puzzle.
@Dvd "You got this" are words of encouragement. "You got it" is a response to "thanks."
@Aging Bull I disagree. A matter of opinion I suppose.
@Ellen "Shouldn't be penalized"? As if the puzzle police were taking Sunday off?
Fun. Especially once I got the theme, which hurried me through the remainder of the puzzle. Thank you!
@Grant I don't get it. Is yellow associated with Protestants?
I’m sorry to see so many people found this one frustrating. It worked OK for me, once I figured it out the gimmick.
@Nancy J. While I don't necessarily agree, I suppose Pat Riley, Don Draper, one-two (punch), and cow tipper could be considered such.
Made good time on this one, albeit without figuring out the theme. Kept working the crossings until the theme answers became apparent. Now I will read the column...
My fastest Friday time. Felt like a Tuesday.
@Lars I’m actually logophobic.
