@SP I did not get the Oscar until just now. Thank you for that call back!
Fun one today. Twice as quick as Saturday and no look ups! Go women ❤️
@pjc I felt the same. Too many "guess what I'm thinking." Clues. Sigh. A very slow solve for me today.
@patk Hawkeye is a nickname for someone from Iowa, the Hawkeye State. (Family brag, Radar is my 2nd cousin!)
I really wanted 3D to be "Drink the kool aid" alas.
Whew. That was TRICKY for a Tuesday. I struggled with the NW corner but somehow still finished faster than average with no lookups. Clever one and figuring out the theme really helped.
Overall not super hard but for a Monday that was kinda tricky! Knavery almost stumped me.
@DIVAS IVLIVS I felt the same about "clay" for 10D
@John Same here! I almost googled "pragency" then literally 🤦🏻♀️
Re 1A : Locks are also bodies of water where one might find oars. 😊
@ThatPeterG Sera is the plural of serum, which is a part of the blood that is banked. (I had ONEG in there for a long time!)
Tricky but satisfying for a Monday. Surprisingly a little faster than average for me.
Stuck on one letter off. Thought the law exam alternative was GLE and did not know Erato/Elato lol. Still finished it pretty quickly for me for a Sunday!
@Ms. Billie M. Spaight PUL and LUP are anagrams of each other. Don't think either is a word?
Whew this was a really tough one for me! So many where I had the wrong answer filled in. Once I figured those out, I was able to muddle through the rest fairly quickly. Overall a slow solve.
@Jim Ready Player One is the book mentioned in the clue.
@acjones Are you sure you weren't on Monday? This was not an easy puzzle for many (including me).
@Steve L Some Gap stores are big box-ish (think like Macy's and Nordstroms). There is one in UVillage here in Seattle that is huge, 2 floors with an escalator inside. (We don't have Aldi here, but I've heard of it as the parent store of Trader Joe's)
@Steve L The dash threw me off for that one. Thought it was supposed to be a "finish this word". Got it eventually but had post for a long time (as in "ex post facto")
@fionatimes The store is really well organized and has lots of signs and look up stations to help you out. Not overwhelming, but can absorb you for hours!
@Chris It was a lot more clever than that, as explained in the Wordplay article. 😊
No hints in a near record time for me. Wow! Had to be patient with getting the crosses on all of the long clues.
@SBK watch Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers or the guy from Primus, Les Claypool. They use slap bass technique.
@CNB So interesting! I got stuck on the upper right (NW?) part of the puzzle. Highly recommend this book by Olga T: "Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead"
@Steve L I associate HISSing with snakes, but ok. 😊
@Rick That was my fill in as well (It was in the mini or midi recently) !
@Ms. Billie M. Spaight Slash or / is the G&R guitarist. / shift is ?
I have a beef to pick with the MIDI 20A (pun intended).
@Alex Isn't a bass guitar a guitar 😉 ?
@Nancy Yes, BookTok is a TikTok thing. Glad you got through it! Ignore the haters (like Barry) 😂 , I got it today just slightly faster than my average.
@Kim Let refers to when the ball hits the net and lands in. It's a "do over" and not a fault for the server.
@Bob T. There was a movie starring Margot Robbie called Hoist the Mizzenmast (like a female centered Pirates of the Caribbean). Or if not, probably in books and film about sailing or pirates!
@Grant Seahawks fans also know it's when the kicker has made 4 field goals!
@MamaJRA I found earlaps is the name for a cap with ear flaps. Never heard of it before either!!
Possibly a record solve for me today, only slowed down by NEKE for 35D (I am of the opinion that ( is "open parentheses", not the singular). Had an AHA moment in the end.
@jes same here. Clever but so tricky! And the revealer didn't help me.
@Vaer Indeed it is. Think another word for internet troll and then another word for a crossword puzzle space. Good luck!
@Vaer Yes, it's a puzzle where you start with one word and end with a very different word and you can only change one letter at each step (or "rung")
Question for the regular puzzlers. The comments section is already "closed" for me on yesterday's puzzle. Is this a new protocol or an anomaly? It seems like this comment section also pops up quite differently as well. 🙏🏼 Thanks for your insight!
@JohnWM You might consider reading it. It was on the bestseller list for much of 2020.
@Matthew O We use both in the US. EKG is the more well known outside of medical practice, though.
@Joe Felice my first pass was REVEREND
@Mike R I got it from the politician!
@Jim Nice! I have read the book and seen the movie but forgot the name and then spelled anorak wrong! Fixing random to rondo was my last piece of the puzzle.
@E Me too! This puzzle was defeating in many ways, this just being one word that was slightly off. Only the long time speed puzzlers enjoyed this one 😹 !
@Sharon still no theme on my iPhone app. What was the theme?
@Lady Mish 💯 agree. Had to think about the spelling, but she is not trivial.
